Concepts and Careers in GIS
(1 credit)
Prerequisite: None.
This course is an introduction to basic geographic information systems (GIS) operations, including file management and data transfer. Students will also learn about the ways in which GIS is used in different fields including business, government, and scientific analysis. Presentations will be made about career possibilities by GIS professionals.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Applications
(4 credits)
Prerequisite: GEOG 2470 or GISC 1411 or consent of instructor.
Application of GIS technology to real workplace applications from public and private sectors. Completion of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) fieldwork required for lab exercises.

Internship in Geography
(3 credits)
Prerequisite: Approval of instructor.
This course will permit students to utilize geographic concepts and applied Geographic Information Systems (GIS).  Students will be required to attend scheduled weekly seminars.

GEOG 2470 (same as GISC 1411)
Introduction to GIS
(4 credits)
Prerequisite:  None.
This course will serve as a basic introduction to the concepts and techniques of GIS. In the laboratory, students will study methods of geographic data collection, including Global Positioning System (GPS) entry, storage, retrieval, and output using ArcGIS software. 
Also available as an Internet Course.

GEOG 2472 (same as GISC 2420)
Intermediate GIS
(4 credits)
Prerequisite: GEOG 2470 (GISC 1411), or consent of instructor.
This course provides more detailed instruction on the theories and procedures associated with the implementation of GIS projects, their management, and their completion.  A variety of GIS software packages will be used in the laboratory, but an emphasis will be placed on ArcInfo.

GEOG 2474 (same as GISC 2401)
Advanced GIS
(4 credits)
Prerequisite: GEOG 2472 (GISC 2472), or consent of instructor.
This courses advances the students' understanding of GIS operations by focusing on database creation, maintenance, and dissemination.  Web-based GIS applications and ArcIMS (Internet Map Server) will constitute the main focus of the laboratory.

GEOG 2478 (same as GISC 1421)
Remote Sensing and  Raster GIS
(4 credits)
Prerequisite: GEOG 2470 (GISC 1411), or consent of instructor.
This course focuses on the history, principles, and applications of satellite imagery. In the laboratory students will study methods of satellite image manipulation, digital processing, and analysis of these data with a raster GIS.

GEOG 2479 (same as GISC 2435)
Programming for  Geographic Information Systems
(4 credits)
Prerequisite: GEOG 2470 (GISC 1411), or consent of instructor.
This course focuses on the use of VisualBasic to customize and expand the capability of GIS applications.   Students will design their own Graphical User Interface (GUI) and complete the production of a fully operational GIS extension.
