Edith Cavell Portrait

Nurse Edith Cavell, 1865 - 1915
The horrors of war have cast their pall over the twentieth century and not least so the ghastly Great War, that destroyed what was left of Victorian optimism and hope for human perfectability. Among the atrocities of that war was the murder by firing squad, in Belgium, of the British Nurse Edith Cavell by Kaiser Wilhelm II's barbarians. She is buried in a simple grave just outside Norwich Cathedral.
