Landmarks in the History of Children's Literature
"
This chronological list contains not only books specifically intended for the young but also books which have been sources of materials considered suitable for youthful readers. These books are the beginning of a foundation for anyone wishing to acquire a degree of expertise in this subject. I have not normally given foreign language titles to works which were originally written in a language other than English but have attempted to use the English titles by which they are usually called and by which they can be easily located. It will often be found that the author of one book listed has written several other books as well. No attempt is made to list all titles, but I hope that the list will be suggestive. Some titles which are available on line will be linked to the remote Web sites from where they can be either downloaded or read on line. Other titles may be found in a large list of on-line books accessible from the departmental Links page . A number of classic children's books have been reprinted in handsome and inexpensive editions by Dover Publications.
