World Literature Outlines

Scholar at Work

In these outlines the works normally read in the world survey course are put into their literary, or at least their chronological, contexts so that students can see where they "fit." As a result there are many more titles listed here than would normally be read in a two-semester survey course. These lists represent the instructor's preparation rather than the student's, and in that sense may be taken as a response to younger colleagues who have asked over the years about the best way to prepare themselves to teach a course for which graduate school did not prepare them. More importantly they are intended for use by the student for either guidance into wider reading or suggestions and help with individual term projects. Outlines of three East Asian literatures are included here for those who can find time for them. They represent at least a very significant half of the world's literature. Because of the scope involved, this page will probably always be "under construction." Send suggestions and corrections to Paul McQuien at tmcquien@mail.accd.edu
