NOTE: All Reading Assignments are due BEFORE class.


Week One: AUGUST 23-27
24th: Last day for class changes
Day 1: Course Introductions; In-class Interviews; Oral Introductions
Reading Assignment: : Ballenger 1-24 (a Reading Assignment means students should read the entire section so that they know all the material in the section)
Skimming Assignment: Ballenger 25-172 (a Skimming Assignment means students should read through the headings and subheadings, read the first sentence of each paragraph, and if they don’t understand the information being presented, read more of the paragraph until they understand. Skimming should be much faster than reading)
Paper Assigned: Research Papers Assigned
Workshop Tuesday, September 21
Final paper due Thursday, September 23
Thursday Journal: How do you feel when someone says "Research Paper"? What is one? What does it involve? How do you approach it? When have you done one? What help do you need to do one?
 
Week Two: AUGUST 30-SEPTEMBER 3
3rd: Census date: Last day to drop without a recorded grade of "W"
Skimming Assignment: Ballenger 63-172
Tuesday: Meet Mrs. Britt in Library in the research area on the second floor
Thursday: Class questions day on research projects. Bring 3 sheets of paper stapled together. On the top, list your topic as well as your name. Each class member will add questions to help you direct your research.
Thursday: Pick up large sheet of paper for thesis statements and topic sentences for workshop
Tuesday Journal: By the end of the class, you must have brought a topic to me (in writing) for which you have found database support in the library. Be specific in the topic by this time.
Thursday Journal: What is your library experience? How fluent are you in using the different resources of the library? Do you know how to find sources other than books? What types of resources do you anticipate looking for on this project (no BOOKS)?
 
Week Three: SEPTEMBER 6-10
6th: Labor Day Holiday
Skimming Assignment Ballenger 173-249; Clarke and Clarke
Tuesday: Thesis statements and topic sentences for your research paper (in progress) worked on in wall of classroom--required. Bring sentences already written on large paper.
Thursday: Discussion of note-taking; Review of documentation, synthesis, or other matters.
Tuesday Journal: Thesis statement and topic sentences on furnished freezer paper in large writing
Thursday Journal: **Typed Works Cited page (in progress) for the research paper (with a minimum or 8 sources on the page)*****
 
Week Four: SEPTEMBER 13-17
Reading Assignment: Clarke and Clarke skim xv-xxiii; 3-29; 33-36; 44-45; 56-61; 65-70
Bring literature text to class starting now
During class, Mrs. Britt will be introducing literary terms and analysis
Tuesday Journal: ***Notes Due for Research paper*** Show them to Mrs. Britt for credit, then keep them to work on your paper. You should have extensive notes by this time. You will not get credit for having highlighted photocopies.
Thursday Journal: What types of literature do you expect to read in the Love and Friendship Unit? What is your view of your love and friendship?
 
Week Five: SEPTEMBER 20-24
Skimming Assignment: Clarke and Clarke—instructional portions of “Elements of” chapters will be covered in class; Love and Friendship chapter begins, 423-616
Tuesday: Research Paper Workshop
NOTE: A full paper is due at workshop. Failure to attend the workshop or to have a complete paper will result in a loss of 7 of the possible 35 points available for the paper.
Thursday: Research Papers Due at the beginning of class.
Sign up for presentations when you turn in the Research Papers-get contact information from partner(s).
Discussion of Explications and documented essays (using the text for source material).
Reading Assignment: Selections from Love and Friendship Unit in Clarke and Clarke
Tuesday Journal: No journals, just research papers for workshop
Thursday Journal: No journals, just research papers due.
 
Week Six: SEPTEMBER 27-OCTOBER 1
Reading Assignment: Review Clarke and Clarke on Explications, Appendix A
Tuesday: Begin Unit on Love and Friendship; Class presentations
Assign Explication: Due Thursday, October 14. (No workshop on these papers)
Assign Documented Essay: Love and Friendship Unit position essay.

Final Beautiful draft due Thursday, October 28

Tuesday Journal: Write about some of the literature you are reading for class using the appropriate literary terms
Thursday Journal: Introduction and one body paragraph from explication essay for Mrs. Britt to review
 
Week Eight: OCTOBER 11-15
Monday, October 11: Employee Development Day—college close for day classes; night classes meet
October 15-17: Mrs. Britt will attend the Two-Year College Association, Southwest, convention in Austin
Thursday: Explications due on Love and Friendship selection
Tuesday: Watch first half of video to get acquainted with it
Thursday: Discuss documented essays using text as source support; how to write a position essay
Tuesday Journal: Explications with questions you need to ask me (I will not keep the papers).
Thursday Journal: Explore a position you might take concerning Love and Friendship that can be supported by the readings from the text (See Clarke and Clarke Appendix A following page 1445)
 
Week Nine: OCTOBER 18-22
Tuesday: Discussion and examples of documented Love and Friendship paper students will read thesis statement, topic sentences, and one body paragraph aloud to class and I will critique the writing
Thursday: Watch the second half of the film for the final to get acquainted with the film
Tuesday Journal: Introduction and one sample revised body paragraph from position essay for me to evaluate during class time--required
Thursday Journal: Questions about documented Love and Friendship paper
 
Week Ten: OCTOBER 25-29
Reading Assignment: Clarke and Clarke, Unit on Life Passages, 617-842
Tuesday: Workshop on Love and Friendship Unit documented paper.
Tuesday: Sign up for Life Passages Unit presentations
Thursday: Completely revised Position Essay on Love and Friendship Unit due.
No Journals since papers are due.
 
Week Eleven: NOVEMBER 1-5
Presentations on Life Passages Unit
Assign Explication: due Tuesday, November 16
Assign Documented Essay: Life Passages Unit paper
Workshop Tuesday, November 23
Final, beautiful draft due Tuesday, November 30

Tuesday: Discussion and examples of documented paper--students will read thesis statement, topic sentences, and one body paragraph aloud to class and I will critique the writing
Tuesday Journal: Thesis statement, topic sentences, and one body paragraph from documented Life Passages essay for me to evaluate during class time—required.
