Draft 2-2 Activities Please do TWO peer responses, and then do your own Writer's Review. You should complete this in class, but if you don't the peer response and Writer's Review should be completed no later than Sunday. You can do up to four peer response total for extra-credit.
Peer Response
Focus on Retelling Piece
1) SAYBACK what you see or hear as the message that this piece is trying to get across. (What do you think is its "insight" or interpretation it is putting forth?)
2) POINT to what you think works well to help get this message across.
3) OFFER any ideas or suggestions you have for getting this message across better.
Focus on ABOUT Piece
One way we can think about what the writer has done in their "retelling" piece is that they have put together a creation out of leggos. They have taken blocks and formed them into something that communicates their message. The peer response questions will follow this metaphor of leggos. In the "About" piece, the writer should be talking about, explaining, and supporting the blocks they have chosen to build their creation out of.
4) POINT to the "block" that the writer did an especially good job at explaining and justifying. Describe what works here?
5) POINT to a "block" that remains unclear or unexplained to you. What isn't working for you?
6) What MORE do you need to understand about how and why they have constructed their retelling piece the way they did?

Writer's Review 2-2
Start by writing down what is in your mind about your pieces that you got either from peer response or from your own looking at the pieces now.
Next do some thinking in writing on your "retelling" piece. How finished is it? What do you think you need to still do on it and how will you go about doing it?
Lastly, talk about your "About" piece. This piece seeks to explain and interpret your "retelling" piece. Where do you have gaps right now in completing this piece? What particular difficulties are you facing with it and how will you go about problem-solving these difficulties? What more do you need to work on with it.

Expectation:
Between draft 2 and 3, I expect you to "revise" your pieces. Follow the approach detailed in the Phrases of Revision handout I gave you. You should do your best to make this final draft as good in content and clear in presentation as you can.
I STRONGLY recommend that you first focus on getting the content finished. Then focus on editing. Print a copy of your pieces and edit on a paper copy. Go back to your original and incorporate changes.
Special Note about Drafts
VERY IMPORTANT--save your draft 2-2 and draft 2-3 as separate files. Once you begin working on draft 2-3, save you draft 2-2 with a new file name so it preserves 2-2 in its original form.
Doing your Revision Analysis (30 minutes)
First, create your "Compare draft 2-2 to 2-3 Version" (Only to be done when you are ALL finished; follow these steps. Do for each piece. To be done in Microsoft Word.)
- Open your draft 2-3
- Click on TOOLS and select COMPARE AND MERGE DOCUMENTS
- Search for and select your draft 2-2
- SAVE AS this draft as 2-Compare and PRINT IT.
- Don't save any other documents as you close them.
Next, review the 2-Compare documents and observe your own revisions.
Revision Analysis Piece:
Write about the revisions and revision choices you made as your worked from draft 2 to draft 3. Explain them, defend them, talk about them. Finish you piece by talking about your own experience and thoughts about revision in general.
