Introduction | ||||
When you enter the MOO, you are a "player object" (also called a character, a player, or a persona). Like every other object in the MOO, it has a set of properties and commands associated with it. This part of the guide will tell you how to change various properties and options on your character so that you can participate in the MOO community with your own personality.
To change any of the options described below, you will need to open up the player options window. To open the player options window, you click on the options button on the button bar. (If you aren't sure where that is, read about it in the MOO interface section.) When you click on the options button, a new window called "Editing options" will open.
Once you have opened this window, you can change various options about your player, including your description, your password, your MOO layout, and your messages. To get to these options, you will need to click on the appropriate links at the top of the editing options window. When you are done changing your options and you have saved them by clicking on the appropriate buttons, you can close the window.
Changing your description
The first set of options in the options window allows you to change your name
and aliases and to change the description that people see when they look at
your character. Type the changes you wish to make into the appropriate boxes.
When you are finished making changes, click on the save changes button.

Getting graphical: In order to display pictures and icons along with your character, you must have the picture saved on a web server somewhere and know the whole web address (URL) for it. You can then cut and paste or type this URL into the URL box (to display a picture) or into the icon box (to display a new icon) and set the size at which this graphic will display. A graphic-link placed in the URL box will display a picture with your description in the viewing area of the MOO. A graphic placed in the Icon box will display a smaller picture for your icon as you move about the MOO. Whenever you enter a room, the viewing area displays an icon of the players and objects in a room. By specifying a unique character icon for yourself, you can avoid the generic player icon that is given to you by default.
Changing your password
You can change the password that you use to log in to the MOO. To do this, you will need to make sure that you have your old password and select a new password to use. If you forget your password, you will have to get a wizard to give you a new one. To get to the password option in the player options screen, click on the password link at the top of the screen, then follow the instructions in the diagram below.

Changing your MOO layout
You can change various options about how your MOO display looks in the layout section and the fonts and colors section.

You can choose to have the MOO display things in a vertical layout (the default layout), a horizontal layout (the button bar, talk area, viewing area, and command window are displayed horizontally across your screen), or just display the talk area only. To change this option, click on the drop down list and select the option that you want, and then click on the button to save changes.
To change fonts and colors, you can click on the various drop down lists displayed below to change how various aspects of the MOO appear on your display. When you are done, click on the button to save changes.

Changes to your display will take effect after you reconnect, so when you are done and have saved changes, you will need to quit and log back in again to see the changes.
Changing your messages
The MOO displays various messages when you enter or leave a room and when you send private messages to other players. Customizing these messages makes your character that much more yours. You can change these messages in the player messages section. The first three messages deal with what other people see when you send them a private message. The last two messages deal with what people see when you leave and enter a room. You can leave these messages as they are, or you can change them.

In messages, the MOO uses %n or %N to substitute for your name. This means that if you change your name, you won't have to change your messages. For example, if I wanted the message seen by people when I page them to be "Erin taps you on the shoulder," I would type "%N taps you on the shoulder" into the "Printed to people you page:" box.
The MOO also uses %l to substitute for locations. This means that the MOO will substitute the name of the room you are in for %l. This means that if you change rooms, the message will still be correct. For example, if I wanted the message seen by people when they send me a page to be "Erin receives your page from where she is," I would type "%N receives your page from %l."
