try another title search and let me know if you have any questions.
*

Maria says, "okay, Eileen, with the
recoder on, showing the slides should still provide a useful recap. Any chance I
can talk you into going back to the very beginning?"
Eileen says, "Well if
you think it is worthwhile."
Maria says, "I really do. "
Eileen says,
"okay here it goes."
Eileen shows slide #1.

Welcome everyone. My name is Eileen Oliver. I am a
reference librarian at the SAC Library and today I will be showing you resources
that provide information about authors and works of literature. The library web
page, which appears on the right side of the screen, is a good starting point to
begin doing research.
During this session, please read all of the text
that appears on the left of the screen before navigating in the web pages that
appear on the right of the screen.
And, when you navigate in the web
pages, know that you can right click on your mouse and select *Back* to return
to the previous web page.
Finally, please feel free to ask me questions
at any time. Just remember to type the word "say" before you type your questions
in the left-hand side of the screen.

Now I'd like you to scroll down the page a bit. On the lower left-hand
side under the heading "Information for Faculty" click on the link that reads
**Library Instruction Program.** Now click on the link located in the right-hand
column that reads **Librarians' Instructional Materials.** Now click on my name,
**Eileen Oliver.** You will see links to three literature-related handouts.
For now, click on the link that reads **Short Story Criticism.** You may
wish to print this and the other two handouts for future reference. If you'd
like to print this handout now, click once anywhere on the handout, then click
on *File* in the upper-left hand corner of the screen, then click on *Print
Frame.*
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Eileen says,
"shall I continue?"
Maria says, "okay, got it. See it,
Erica?"
EricaO_[Guest] says, "Yes"
EricaO_[Guest] says, "I am
printing"

The first section of this handout lists print reference materials
located on the second floor of the SAC Library. Many of these materials can also
be accessed online in a full-text database called *Literature Resource Center.*
We will look at that database later in this session.

We are
going to return to the Library homepage and then we will click on the
**Catalog** link located on the upper left-hand side of the page.
The
Library catalog contains records for every item the Library owns. The handout we
just looked at explains how to do several kinds of searches in the catalog. We
will do a subject search together. Always do a subject search when you are
looking for literary criticism about an author. To do a subject search, click on
subject, then type in the author's name, last name first.
Let's search
for books about Alice Walker. Click on *Subject,* then type "walker alice". Then
hit your enter key. (Notice that you don't need to capitalize when searching in
the Library catalog.) Notice the subject heading that that contains the words
**Criticism and Interpretation.** Don't click on this link now!

The image to the right shows the list of titles that would appear if
you were to click on the subject heading containing the words "Criticism and
Interpretation."

Maria
says, "Thanks. These seem really helpful."
Eileen shows slide
#6.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * **
This next image shows
what would appear if you were to click on an individual title. Note the three
boxes that contain location, call number and status information. You'll need
this information to locate the book on the shelf. The book should be on the
shelf if the word *Available* appears in the Status box. If a date appears in
this box, the book is currently checked out.
Later, try doing a subject
search on an author of your choice. Or, if you want to look for books on a topic
(rather than a person), try a keyword search. Consult your handout for keyword
search examples.

Okay, let's return to the homepage. We are now going to search two
databases that provide full-text information on authors and works of
literature.
Click on the link located on the upper left-hand side of the
screen that reads **Databases and Indexes.** Then click on the link that reads
**Literary Criticism and Literature.** Finally, click on **Literature Resource
Center.**
If you are accessing this or any of the databases from off
campus, you will be asked to enter your User Name (social security number) and
Password (four digit PIN number).
Let me know when you have successfully
entered *Literature Resource Center.*

Eileen says, "Erica, I
guess you will just need to visualise from here on."
Maria says, "Since it
won't work, let's just read these slides and go on. I'm done."
EricaO_[Guest]
says, "Ok"
EricaO_[Guest] says, ":-("
Eileen shows slide #8.

We are going to do a *Title* search,
so click on **Title** located beneath the heading, *Other
Searches.*
Type, "The Sky is Gray" in the title box, and type "Gaines" in
the author box, then click on *Search.* You can now click on any of the blue

try another title search and let me know if you have any questions.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Maria says, "Once anyone who sees
this transcript sees the urls, they can follow it on their own."
Eileen says,
"That's true."
Maria says, "It will work then, and the transcript will
include the urls. Once the browser proxy is set and the cookies accepted, it
should work."
Maria says, "I'm ready."
Eileen shows slide #9.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * **
Let's return to the Library's
homepage. We are going to return to the literary databases so click on
**Databases and Indexes,** then **Literary Criticism & Literature.** Now
click on **Expanded Academic ASAP.* This database provides some full-text
articles in a variety of subject areas, including literature.
We are
going to do a subject search. (If you were searching for articles on a topic and
not a person, you would do a *keyword* search. So, you would need to first click
on *keyword* located in the blue bar on the left-hand side of the screen).
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Eileen displays slide
#7 on web1302:
Maria says, "does this
one require the proxy/password procedure?"
Eileen says, "Yes, all the
databases do."
Maria says, "okay, I'll just wait until we're ready to go
on."
Eileen says, "Okay. Let me know when you are ready
Erica."
EricaO_[Guest] says, "Don't wait for me :-) Still not
working"
Eileen shows slide #1.

Let's return to the Library's homepage. Take a minute to explore
this page. I'd like to point out a couple of links that are useful to distance
education students.
The **Ask a Librarian** link is located on the upper
right-hand side of the page. This service allows you to send reference questions
to SAC librarians at any time. We try to respond within 24 hours or sooner if
possible. You can always call the reference desk as well. Our number is
210-733-2477.
Beneath the **Ask a Librarian** link are links to
Interlibrary Loan request forms. When you need a book or article that the
Library does not own, fill out one of these forms and we will try to locate a
copy that you can borrow. You will be notified when that copy arrives in the
Library.

Maria says,
"just wondered if you were finished reading...."
Eileen displays slide #8 on
web1302:
Eileen says, "I can go
back if you like."
EricaO_[Guest] says, "KOOL"
Maria says, "No need to go
back. I'm with you and I think Erica is too."
EricaO_[Guest] says,
"Yes"
Eileen says, "okay"
Maria says, "I'm ready."
Eileen shows
slide #2.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * **
This is the end
of today's session. I suggest that you review the online handouts or take some
time now to search in the databases. I'll be here waiting for any questions you
may have.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Eileen says,
"Erica--we have plenty of time if you want to ask questions about anything
"
EricaO_[Guest] says, "No questions, but I thought this was very
neat"
Maria says, "Thanks so much, Eileen. Lennie will create the transcript
so that others can see it all and follow the tour."
EricaO_[Guest] says, "I
like the integration of the chat room and slide show"
EricaO_[Guest] says,
"I've never seen that before"
Eileen says, "I'm glad you liked the
format."
EricaO_[Guest] says, "But, eventhough it didn't work in here, I am
familiar with the access to the databases off campus from my previous English
class, so it's ok"
Eileen says, "Okay good. "
EricaO_[Guest] says, "Yes, I
do"
Maria says, "Erica, I'm glad you could join us. Once you get the browser
configured, go to the library from the link describing the Moo. Go into the
databases as instructed in the session, and you'll see what would have
seen."
EricaO_[Guest] says, "ok"
Eileen says, "thanks for coming
Erica."
Maria says, "Okay, everybody, it's a wrap. As soon as I stop the
recorder, I'll be signing out."
EricaO_[Guest] says, "Thank you. It was neat.
Good evening, God bless"
Eileen says, "good night all."
Maria says, "Same
to you."
EricaO_[Guest] says, "thanks"
EricaO_[Guest] has
disconnected.
The housekeeper arrives to remove EricaO_[Guest].
