The Role of the Spectator-Participant in Computer-Networked Learning Environments

The Question:

What are the dynamics of learning that occur in a computer networked environment? In particular, what is going on during student-to-student communication that leads to learning? What activities, processes (both cognitive and physical) and situations spark learning and why? Does a computer networked environment and student-to-student communication really lead to collaborative learning and the social construction of knowledge? If it does, then how does it promote this learning?
