Announcements and Events (Check back frequently)International Education Week November 13-17, 2006 Monday, Nov. 13 Sheridan Board Rm 12:00-2:00 “International Week Kick-Off” Celebrate the beginning of International Education Week at the ACCD District office downtown. Blake Hastings, executive director of the Free Trade Alliance San Antonio, will be the keynote speaker . All students, staff, and faculty are welcomed!
Monday, Nov. 13 Loftin 10:00-11:00 “Exploring China” Fulbright Scholar from China, Professor Xue Feng Bai, will discuss the economic, social, and political changes taking place today in China.
Tuesday, Nov. 14 Loftin 10:50-12:05 “Bridges to the World” SAC students from Morocco, Philippines, South Africa, India, Germany, and Israel will talk about their countries’ geography, customs, languages and political systems. San Antonio College professor, Dr. Philip Rogers will also facilitate a discussion on immigration issues faced in the students’ countries.

Thursday, Nov. 16 Methodist Student Center “International Film Festival” 9:30-11:30 Lagaan (2001) Indian film Land Tax / Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India A remarkable story about the triumph of the ordinary, set in 1890s India. The ruling British have imposed a harsh tax (lagaan) on the farmers, prompting the villagers of Champaner to plead for a waiver. So, an arrogant and capricious British commander, Capt. Russell, challenges the villagers to a cricket match: If the villagers win, they'll avoid taxation for 3 years; if they lose, they'll pay the tax thrice over. 1:30-3:30 Tsotsi (2006) South African film This Oscar-winning Best Foreign Language film shows that no soul is too far gone from being reformed. After shooting a woman and driving off in her car, Tsotsi (Presley Chweneyagae), a ruthless thug, is surprised to discover he isn't alone, kept company by a crying infant in the backseat. He grudgingly takes the child home, and through his efforts to care for the tyke, Tsotsi slowly rediscovers his compassion, self-respect and capacity to love.
