Alberto del Canto
founds the first Monterrey
near a spring named Ojos de Agua de Santa Lucía. The settlement
lasted all of one year when the Real Audiencia de Guadalajara called for
the capture of Del Canto in 1578.
1582 Luis Carvajal y de la Cueva found Villa de
San Luis Rey de Francia (Later to be called Monterrey) for the second time.
1587 A Royal decree is issued to disband the settlement
of Villa de San Luis Rey de Francia after only eight years of existence.
1596 September 20 Don Diego de Montemayor founded
Ciudad Metropolitana de Nuestra Señora de Monterrey (Metropolitan
City of Our Lady of Monterrey) it was named in honor of Gaspar de Zúñiga
y Acevedo the viceroy of New Spain.
1599 February 11th Don Diego de Montemayor is named
governor of the State of Nuevo Leon and Monterrey is declared the capital
of the new state.
1612 A major catastrophe occurs, a massive flood
sets back the city with the general destruction of property and land.
1626 Work on the Cathedral is started.

1787 The Obispado, the Bishop’s Palace is constructed
as Bishop Fray Rafael Jose de Verger's retirement home.

1810 September 16 Mexican Independence is declared
by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla when he issued the “Grito de Dolores” calling
for the end of rule by Spanish peninsulars, for equality of races, and
for redistribution of land.

1811 The fight for Mexico’s independence was brought
to Monterrey’s door when the Governor of Nuevo Leon Manuel de Santa María
was shot and killed.
1813 July 2nd Under the Governorship of Fernando
de Uribe (interim governor) José Herrera, leader of the independence
movement, attacks the city. He makes it to the central plaza but is turned
back and defeated by the realistas.
1821 Agustín de Iturbide drafted the Plan
De Iguala a conservative document that declared that the Mexican nation
was to be independent, that its religion was to be Roman Catholicism, and
that its inhabitants were to be united, without distinction between Mexican
and European.
1821 August 24th Juan O'Donojú the Spanish
captain general, arrived in the viceregal capital. Without the manpower
to fight a battle he signed the Treaty of Cordoba putting an official end
to Mexico’s reliance on Spain.
1824 May 7th Nuevo Leon is once again declared
a state and Monterrey its new capital.
1829—Mexico
abolishes slavery
1833 The Cathedral is finished 165yrs after construction
was first undertaken. It is consecrated by the Bishop Belauzaran.

1846 September 23rd Zachary Taylor defeated and
captured the city of Monterrey, but not before a fierce stand was held
at the Obispado. On September 24th Taylor advanced on the main plaza and
the city was taken.
1867 Industry began to flourish with the opening
of several plants. They produced a variety of items: beer, ice, matches,
soap, sugar, textile mills, and wheat.
1882 A direct rail connection with Laredo, Texas
is completed, it helps Monterrey to expand its economy and industry.
1887 The Municipal Palace (now known as the old
municipal palace) is completed 102yrs after its initial construction.

1890’s Four metallurgy plants open: Nuevo Leon
Smelting, Compania Minera, Fund Dora y Afinidora Monterrey, and Gran Fundicion
Nacional Mexicana.
1895 August, Under the Governorship of Bernardo
Reyes the construction of El Palacio de Gobierno (the palace of government)
is started.

1900 The Fundidora De Fierro y Acero de Monterrey,

1909 La Vidriera Monterrey, a glass company opens

1910 The start of the Mexican Revolution. Francisco
Madero leads the uprising against Porfirio Díaz and his dictatorship,
he is joined by Pancho Villa, Pascual Orozco, Emiliano Zapata.

1914 April 24th Revolutionary forces advanced on
Monterrey and captured the city, shortly after the battle was won Pancho
Villa entered the city.
1917 Under the eyes of Venustiano Carranza, the
new president, a new constitution is written.
1920 The Mexican Revolution is considered to be
over and Monterrey moves on. The 20’s usher in a period of social and cultural
expansion.
1929 Under newly structured business regulations,
Monterrey’s businessmen organize a national employers’ confederation. It’s
named the Confederacion Patronal de la Republica Mexicana (COMPRAMEX).
1930 The Inter-American Highway is opened connecting
Monterrey to the U.S. and the rest of Mexico.

boom, with companies such as Alfa, Protexa, and CDYSA enjoying the benefits.
1980’s Brought about a collapse in the market for

Conference on Financing for Development was held in Monterrey, heads of
state from over 50 countries attended.

Foundations San
Antonio was christened by Franciscan Father Damien Massanet on June
13, 1691 for the Native American "Indian" village site in a pleasant wooded
area of spring-fed streams at the southern edge of the Texas Hill Country.
He named the site and the river for the Feast Day of Saint Anthony of Padova.
1718 Alamo was built; it was actually named San
Antonio de Valero. Was original use was to convert the local native population
to Christianity. And, later used as a fort in the battle for Texas independence.

1731 San Juan Mission was re-established in San
Antonio. Originally christened San José de los Nazonis while in
East Texas, and later called San Juan Capistrano when established in San
Antonio.

1731 Espada Mission, named San Francisco de los

1918 Brooks Air Force Base was establish; On Dec.
5, 1917, the Army named the site Kelly Field No. 5, and groundbreaking
ceremonies were held Dec. 8. On Feb. 4, 1918, the new facility was renamed
Brooks Field in honor of Cadet Sidney J. Brooks Jr., a native of San Antonio
who died during his final training flight on Nov. 13, 1917, when his aircraft
turned nose down and crashed at Kelly Field

1926 Witte Museum was the first to open in San
Antonio; Alfred Witte bequeath $65,000 dollars to the city of San Antonio
for construction of a museum of art, science and history.

1928 Majestic Theatre was built by Karl Hoblitzelle
for his theatre chain (the Interstate Amusement Company of Dallas). The
Majestic Theatre was one of many designed by John Eberson (1875-1964) for
Hoblitzelle, and it was Eberson's final "trademark" Atmospheric theatre,
the first being The Majestic in Houston in 1923.
