nBy 1857, Indian soldiers (sepoys) mutinied under the East India Company’s rule, intending to throw out the British. The mutiny was unsuccessful, and by May of 1858, the British had established their authority over India; this time England itself established themselves as sole colonial ruler.

nThese protests called upon the co-operation of both Hindus and Muslims; co-operation that ended in bloodshed still seen today between India and Pakistan.
