The Coromandel Coast: Madras (Chennai), A Case Study

By the 17th century Ft. George had expanded to a flourishing settlement. In spite of British efforts to avoid the complications of a settler community, Madras reflected the styles and culture of its English founders. The fort interior and homes of the East India Company officials and their familes were designed in the Georgian style, constructed by local artisans and craftsman from local materials with furnishings crafted both locally and in England.
