Why Use New Media ?

Using new media to teach provides numerous exciting advantages, including:

  • accommodates different learning styles
  • nurtures intellectual curiosity
  • provides an immediate and interactive connection to the world beyond the classroom
  • teaches computer, network , and Internet literacy while narrowing the "digital divide"
  • enhances access to sources of information
  • encourages instructors to rethink the presentation of course material

Finally, each generation of teachers in this century has been confronted with new possibilities for improving the quality of teaching and student learning. First radio, then television, slides, filmstrips, next the computer and video, and now the Internet. Each promise to revolutionize the ways students learn and instructors teach. What does the new generation of New Media mean for instructors and students? You will find yourself more engaged with students, coaching them through web based activities and research, or showing them how to analyze a primary document.
