Rolling Multimedia Units ~ New Media Platforms

Bringing New Media into the traditional classroom requires various types of equipment, from the reliable overheard projector to the state-of-the-art Rolling Media Unit. The SAC Technology Training & Instructional Innovation Center provides certification training for the Rolling Multimedia Units.
  • The Units are well equipped for class room use and are assigned to all major campus buildings.
  • Any San Antonio College employee is eligible to receive this training and become certified to check the equipment out to use for presentations on campus.
  • Consult the current Training Schedule for classes.
  • For additional information call 733-2188.
Classroom use of Multimedia Units
  • Designated classrooms are wired for Internet access.
  • Instructors can introduce Web activities students can then complete outside of class.
  • Instructors may also show CD-ROMs, view PowerPoint presentations, and generally use the computer and projector to expand course materials beyond the classroom.
  • The units have VCRs which allow instructors to project videos on the large screen.

Examples of New Media use in History

Learning how to use the equipment is the first step in developing New Media / Internet applications for teaching. The next, is deciding how to apply it within your course. Whether you are a first time or an experienced new media user, the application process is a tool to help you continue to find ways to do what you do best, teach

History students in

Student Learning Assistance Center (SLAC)

  • The SLAC supplements classroom instruction by offering learning strategies which enhance the success potential of traditional and nontraditional students in the college environment.
  • Instructors may reserve a computer classroom to conduct online learning sessions and Web activities.

Jonathan A. Lee uses the Internet, PowerPoint, and scanning technology to offer a mixture of visual aids in the classroom ranging from pictures, works of art, charts, graphs, and documents.

Carol A. Keller uses new media to readily accommodate different learning styles and expand student access to sources of historical information.

  • New Media provides connection to the world beyond the classroom, and challenges students to think about history in new and different ways.
  • Keller's classes routinely visit the SLAC.
  • Activity: Islam and Christendom: The Crusade
