Resources: Useful Links and FAQs

Having the vast resources of the World Wide Web at your fingertips is a asset for effective online learning. Learning to navigate the Web efficiently is useful, but first take time to familiarize yourself with the resources created locally to support your learning.

Useful Links: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

Q. What do I do if I move and lose my Internet Service Provider (ISP) or have interrupted service?

A. It is the student's responsibility to maintain Internet access at all times during the semester. Plan early and have a contingency plan should your ISP be interrupted. Determine the hours and location of computer labs at other ACCD college campuses.

Q. My hard drive just crashed, HELP!

A. When you commit to taking an Internet class you are committing to providing constant Internet access. See above — devise a reliable back-up plan for computer or ISP failure. Your assignments, exams, and discussion participation will not wait while you spend days getting your system or ISP restored. Plan ahead. Have an alternate means of access.

Q. What do I do if I am going to be out of town during exam access?

A. Establish a reliable procedure and set aside the time to access the Internet at a hotel, Internet cafe, Kinko's or other commercial site, relative's computer, or other site. Remember you can access your assignments, submit assignments, take exams (unless they are on-campus) wherever you have Internet access. If your instructor gives on-campus exams contact the instructor at least two weeks before your planned absence to determine if you can arrange a make-up.

Q. I missed the access time for taking an online quiz, I thought the exam closed at 8 PM, but learned it closed at 0800, what do I do?

A. If you are using WebCT, you must adapt to the 24 hour clock. The U.S. is one of the few countries to use a 12 hour A.M. and P.M. time sequence. Note all exam access times on your personal calendar.

Q. I had a power failure in the middle of taking my exam and was not able to complete it, what do I do?

A. Notify your instructor immediately. If you cannot access your email, call and leave a message on the instructor's office phone. Explain exactly what happened and give the date and times of power outage. In most cases you will be allowed to re-access your exam.

Q. What can I do to protect my computer from viruses?

A. Contact the ACCD Virus Information Center

Q. What is IDEA?

A. The Internet Dialup for Educational Access (IDEA) provides Internet Service for the Students, Faculty and Staff of Alamo Community College District. IDEA includes a Netscape browser, Eudora Lite E-mail application, and FTP access. Contact IDEA.

Q. I am having trouble accessing my course. I need help.

A. Contact the ACCD help desk or your college help desk .

Q. What is a LISTSERV© Discussion Group used by my Internet Course?

A. LISTSERV© is a system which creates, manages and controls electronic "mailing lists." These "mailing lists" are names and E-mail addresses of users who wish to receive messages on particular topic. Clients can subscribe to a list and receive all messages sent to the list by other subscribed clients. All replies to the messages will be distributed to the list. Check with your instructor and on your course Web page for instructions.

Q. How do I communicate via a LISTSERV© ?

A. You will find instructions on your course site. You may also go to FAQs for LISTSERV at ACCD Multiversity of Cyber Learning.

Q. How can I find out how to use WebCT?

A. WebCT simply means Web course tools. WebCT is a course management system that helps your instructor and you keep track of your course work, assignments, exams, discussions, and allows you to view your progress and grades.

Q. How do I know if I am ready for an Internet course?

A. Take the Internet skills test
