I. Course Description
As a continuation of DAAC 2166, Practicum I, this course provides the student with practical general training and experiences in the workplace.  The college with the employer develops and documents an individualized plan for the student.  The plan relates the workplace training and experiences to the student’s general and technical course of study.  Students enrolling in this course must enroll in DAAC 2272.  The guided external experiences must meet the guidelines set forth by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) for licensure as chemical dependency counselor. The student will be required to complete 150 clock hours of supervised work experience during the semester.  This course partially fulfills the approved supervised fieldwork practicum requirements specified for licensure by DSHS. The guided external experiences may be paid or unpaid.

Prerequisite: DAAC 2166 and DAAC 2271

            Co-requisite:  Must be enrolled in DAAC 2272

IV. Methods of Instruction
Each student is supervised by an on-site practicum supervisor who is a licensed chemical dependency counselor or a Qualified Credentialed Counselor (QCC) per the Texas Department of State Health Services. The supervisor structures the training according to the nature and requirements of each particular agency and provides the necessary guidance and instruction.
The course instructor provides additional relevant information and facilitates group discussion, individual progress reports, and self-evaluation.

 

V. Course Content
Emphasis is placed on developing and applying knowledge and skills
learned in the classroom, gaining "on-the-job" experience in substance abuse
related settings, and continuing development of oral and written communications skills.
VI. Learning Outcomes  
            The student will demonstrate basic practical skills in a supervised work environment. 

Performance Objectives:  Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate professional conduct, acceptance of personal responsibility and initiative as a mental health worker in substance abuse related mental health settings.
  • Demonstrate a proficiency in using the mental health skills learned in the classroom.
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply the theories and methods of mental health intervention to resolve problems encountered in real-life settings.
  • Identify the stresses and challenges that occur as the result of establishing a personal identity as a substance abuse counselor.
  • Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of mental health agencies dealing with substance abuse and the methods used to deliver mental health services.
  • Demonstrate the academic skills of inquiry, analysis, and oral and written communication skills.

Additional objectives may be added by the course instructor.
 Measurement of student competency or learning outcome may include:  
Grade primarily based on the successful completion of the 150 clock-hours of work/training experience at a practicum site and the evaluation of the student’s primary site supervisor.  Satisfactory completion of all academic requirements, such as, individual progress reports, self-evaluation of personal growth and specific knowledge gained, active participation in group discussions, practicum supervisor's evaluation, and so on.
      Additional measurement criteria may be used at the discretion of the instructor. 
SCANS Competencies: See attached for a list of competencies related to the workplace as outlined by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. 
VII.  Course requirements and grade computation.  
A. College Requirements:
A written, comprehensive final examination, not to exceed two and one-half hours in length, shall be given at the end of each semester for each course at the regularly scheduled time. Any exceptions to these requirements must be approved by the appropriate dean. Other examinations or measures are given/utilized at the discretion of the instructor.

A student who must be absent from a final examination should petition that instructor for permission to postpone the examination. A student absent without permission from a final examination is graded “F.” Postponed examinations result in a grade of “I.” The final exam must be taken within 120 calendar days from the end of the semester or the grade automatically becomes an “F.” (San Antonio College Bulletin, Faculty Handbook - January 1995)

B.  Departmental Requirement: 
Examinations, to include the comprehensive final exam, may consist of essay and/or objective questions, oral examination methods and/or performance measures.

VIII.       College Policies:

E.         Academic Dishonesty: Students may be subject to disciplinary proceedings resulting
in an academic penalty or disciplinary penalty for academic dishonesty. Academic Dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating on a test, plagiarism and collusion. For additional information refer to the “Student Code of Conduct” in the San Antonio College Bulletin.

F.         Students are required to silence all electronic devices (e.g., pagers, cellular phones, etc.) when in
      classrooms, laboratories and the library. (College Academic Council, 01/ 2000)

G.         San Antonio College Attendance Policy: Regular and punctual attendance at all classes and laboratories, day and/or evening, is required. A student absent for any reason is responsible for all work missed. Both tardiness and early departure from class are forms of absenteeism. The instructor establishes the policy with regard to each.  Absences of each student are recorded without exception. The counting of absences begins on the first day of class. A student absent the equivalent of two weeks of instruction in a 16-week semester may be dropped by the instructor. If a student is dropped from a class for excessive absences, the instructor will record a grade of “W’ (withdraw). It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that the withdrawals have been submitted.
