Photojournalism is reporting
with words and pictures.

When editing photographs, the picture editor looks for DYNAMICS.

Dynamics include:

Motion - a blurring effect

Emotion - any of the emotions pictured: anger, sadness, happiness, love, etc.,

Mood - generally done with lighting, texture, smoke, fog, etc.

Action - just as the name suggests, many times combined with motion

Reaction - one person's "reaction" to something or someone else

Interaction - involves several people, usually, and may include touching, etc.

Usually, a photojournalist's portfolio (Associated Press Managing Editors members) includes news, feature, sports, color, photo illustration, picture story

Here is a Photo Story. Note the variety of shapes and sizes.

A Picture Story, according to the Life magazine formula, should include:

An opening shot, interaction or reaction photo, closeup (or detail) series/sequence, overview, portrait, midshot and closing shot. The combined photos should tell a story with a beginning, a middle and an end.The story requires many hours, multiple images and a reporter's eye for detail.

Check out the Pictures of the Year and other contests from National Press Photographers Association.

Your images should be protected from unauthorized use by others.

Despite photojournalism's being a fiercely competitive field, the Department of Labor expects the employment to increase as fast as average. "[A]s advances in telecommunications create new markets and products - electronic newspapers and magazines, for example, which rely heavily on images-the demand for pictures and images is expected to increase."

You will hand in the finished cover. It should be labeled with whatever DYNAMIC you think it is: Action, interaction, reaction, mood, motion or emotion. You may have more than one DYNAMIC in the photograph. Plan your cover and do a rough draft before doing the final version. I will help with the final version, but you must be prepared to do it with my help.
