Now is your chance to get in on the giving. If every former student in the department (See "alumni" below for list of former students) sent in just $20, students currently enrolled in reporting, editing and design classes and working for The Ranger, The Fourth Write or The Ranger Online could have a decent stipend. Staff salaries have lagged far behind cost-of-living increases, and, as you may recall, little time is available for staff members to work at another job. As a result, stress over how to pay for rent, food, tuition, books and other items becomes a problem for staffers. If this idea to assist students appeals to you, send a check or money order made out to "Friends of Journalism at SAC" to the Department of Journalism-Photography, San Antonio College, 1300 San Pedro Ave., San Antonio, TX 78212-4299. Some employers will match or further embellish employee contributions. You may want to look into that to double your financial impact. The department's Web site contains information for alumni, high school students and friends of the department. This main site will direct you to Boastings, a site that contains tidbits of information about the department. If you have news of interest to the college community, send it to us. We are interested in your life since you left San Antonio College. Careers, honors, milestones, families -- all would be important to us. The department's Web site also plays host to the campus chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. The 22nd annual Urban Journalism Workshop at San Antonio College ended successfully June 23 with the closing luncheon. Twelve students produced the workshop newspaper, You S.A., and 11 current or former students served on the workshop staff as resident assistants, team leaders or consultants. To see what happened during the 13 days of the event, click on Boot Camp 2006. Three workshoppers received scholarships from the Alamo Community College District to study journalism or photography at SAC. The $1,500 scholarships were awarded to Torrie Bethany, Brackenridge High School; Yvonne Freckmann, North East School of the Arts; and Mia Victoria Cortez, Taft High School. The awards are presented each year for students to study journalism or photography at San Antonio College. Winners last year now studying at SAC are Chantae Arrington of Warren High School and Brandy Bineham of Taft High School. In a recent note to the department, former Ranger editor Jack Evans has updated his whereabouts. Evans served for several years as spokesman for Alaska Airlines before spending two years in Washington, D.C. heading up the communications and external affairsfor the airline industry lobby, the Air Transport Association. He is back in Seattle with Microsoft's corporate public relations department, dealing with legal and antitrust issues. Here is a list of former students who worked on The Ranger. Find your name here and let us know where you are and how to reach you. If you wish, send us your e-mail address and we will connect you to other alums. E-mail the information to cfhunt@gmail.com
