Ranger Assignment Self-critique Turn-in Procedure
Congratulations for having your photographic works published thousands of copies in the Ranger and viewed by tens and thousands of people around the world online. This is the excitement of being a photojournalist. For learning purpose and getting grades for your class, you will need to turn in a self-critique for the assignments you took for the Ranger, regardless they are published or not. For photos you shoot for the Ranger, either in print or online, you will need to do the following:
- For published photos in print, cut out the photo clippings with the cutline, paste it on a piece of letter size paper with the published date and page number listed next to it. If your photo is published online, print the Ranger Online screen with your photo on it. In case your assignments were not published, print out the photo and list the date the photo was taken.
- On another piece of letter size paper, type (not handwritten) your critique on each assignment, write at least half page but no more than one page for each assignment (double space, 12 Times New Roman). One assignment, one critque. If an assignment yeild more than one published photos, only one critique is enough.
- On your critique, I expect you give answers to yourself and your instructor the following questions:
- What kind of photos did I expect from the assignment?
- What worked? Why?
- What didn’t work? Why?
- What do you think you (not the subject) could do to make it more successful?
- Plain mug shots, plain copying or scanning are not count into your “7 photos for the semester,” those photos are exempted from the critique. However, it will still affect your weekly grade if it turns out to be unacceptable.
- Please specify in your critique if the assignment is a self-generated assignment (wild art/enterprise) because you will receive bonus from this kind of assignments.
All clippings and critiques needed to be turn in the following Wed. (for Wed. class) or Thur. (for Thur. Class) after the photos were published. Grading criteria is as listed in the course syllabus.Although unpublished photos are not counted towards your “7 photos.” You will receive a partial grade from those assignments if you turn in your photos and critiques. Missing an assignment without good reason will receive a 0 grade, late to an assignment will receive a serious penalty.
Because Ranger assignments could sometimes be rather challenging and difficult to come up with good results, therefore, if you don’t like your grades, you can choose to pick up another one to shoot for a better grade. If your published-photo count for the Ranger reaches more than 7, only your best 7 assignment grades will be calculated into your final grade. Lower grades will be eliminated. However, this policy does not apply to failing assignments (grades below 70) such as no-show or tardy to assignments. Those grades are irreplaceable and stay as one of the 7.
