COURSE DESCRIPTION

Credit Hours: 2 (2-2-1)

Concepts of Physical Fitness and Wellness is an introduction to core concepts through identifying individual current health and fitness levels providing information to improve and maintain optimal health and fitness, cultivating participating in an exercise and nutritional program. This course is designed to facilitate development of the physical fitness and wellness concepts necessary to achieve lifelong fitness and healthy behavior.

Instruction will consist of: participating in physical activity while exploring Internet sources and the textbook to gain knowledge about the scientific principle on which fitness and wellness programs are founded. Course topics will include: healthy activity choices, stress management, body composition, nutrition and healthy eating, cardiovascular fitness, strength and flexibility programs.

*Note: this course is taught over the Internet as well as the traditional classroom setting.

TO COMPLETE THIS COURSE SUCCESSFULLY, THE STUDENT IS REQUIRED TO:

Read the assigned chapters in the text book.

Read the corresponding chapter lecture notes or the power point presentations of each chapter.

Submit chapter labs, exercise and nutrition logs by required dates and times.

Submit type written (word processed) save as Rich Text Format (.rtf) assignment: Personal Health Improvement Project by required date and time.

Take four (4) written objective style examinations during the semester, by the required date and time.

Students must abide by the policies, procedures, and rules set forth by all college, district, and state policies. See the San Antonio College Bulletin for more information.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

To develop an understanding of how the components of physical fitness and wellness can contribute to a healthy lifestyle, which can prevent chronic disease and reduce stress.

To develop the ability to incorporate cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility into individual workouts according to guidelines presented in the text.

To develop a heighten sense of awareness of yourself, target certain lifestyle behaviors and make changes to improve fitness and wellness.

To focus on total wellness by making responsible decisions concerning the dimensions of wellness and the effect on quality of life.

To understand , monitor, and make changes in your level of fitness and wellness.

REQUIRED TEXT

Fit and Well: Core Concepts & Labs in Physical Fitness and Wellness, 8th ed., by Thomas D. Fahey, Paul M. Insel, and Walton T. Roth: Mayfield Publishing, 2008

GRADING

Four scheduled exams are designed to evaluate your understanding of the material presented in the text book and of the instructor's lectures. Exams will consist of 25 timed multiple choice and true/false questions. Each objective question will count four points each.

(4) Written (timed) exams within WebCT- 40%

Chapter labs - 20%

Written Exercise Log - 15%

Nutrition Log - 15%

Introduction to instructor and fellow students within Black Board Vista- 10%
