Catalog Description: This course emphasizes the development of muscular strength and endurance through the use of free weights and weight machines.  Typical activity includes a circuit training routine which works all major muscle groups of the body. Principles of strength training, safety guidelines and various training techniques are presented.

IV.

Instruction will consist of: Lecture in relation to principles of physical fitness and related forms of exercise.  Demonstration and participation in various weight training routines such as circuit training and the use of percentages of maximum lifts will be presented.  The conduct of the class will consist of the use of free weights and weight machines. Safety in the classroom will be emphasized.

VI.

Learning Outcomes and Performances Objectives with their methods of measurements as used to determine the students’ mastery of those outcomes.

 

Learning Outcome 1:  Students will develop an understanding of the health related components of physical fitness to include cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, muscular flexibility and body composition and the effect that weight training as a form of exercise may have on those components of physical fitness.

 

Performance Objectives/Methods of Measurement for each objective:

1.      The student will participate in a weight training program which will affect the various

components of physical fitness.  Effects of the weight training will be measured by

improvement in various forms of physical fitness assessment to include a 1 repetition maximum ratio test.

 

Learning Outcome 2:  Students will understand the basic principles of weight training to include knowledge of the overload principle, progressive resistance and understanding of major muscle groups and their relation to specific weight training exercises.

 

Performance Objectives/Methods of Measurement for each objective:

1.      The student will apply the basic principles of weight training through participation in weight training routines.

2.     Written Tests

 

Learning Outcome 3: The student will be able to execute a complete circuit while in a group of two or three in the time allotment, while completely implementing all safety rules.

 

Performance Objective/Methods of measurements for each objective:

1.      The student will be able to complete a full circuit while performing the correct amount of weight to be used for each individual.  Evaluation will be performance and skill mastery.

2.      The students will be able to take and perform a ratio examination.  Evaluation will be 100% performance.

3.      The student will be able to take and perform a dip and pull-up examination.  Evaluation will be 100% performance.

 

Learning Outcome 4: The student will be able to follow and perform a complete percentage workout within the allotted time while still being able to finish the circuit workout on an individual level.

 

Performance Objective/Methods of measurements for each objective:

1.      The student will be able to do a percentage workout based on the ratio test.  Evaluation will be 100% based on observation.

2.      The student will be able to take the adjusted pulse rate and measure their cardiovascular results.  Evaluation will be a performance test.

Course requirements and grade computation.

 

 

A.

College Requirements:

 

A written, comprehensive final examination, not to exceed two and half hours in length, shall be given at the end of each semester for each course at the regular scheduled time.  Any exceptions to these requirements must be approved by the appropriate dean.  Other examinations are given at the discretion of the instructor.

 

A student who must be absent from the final examination should petition that instructor for permission to postpone the examination.  A student absent without permission from a final examination is graded “F.” Postponed examinations result in a grade of “I.” The final exam must be taken within 120 calendar days from the end of the semester or the grade automatically becomes an “F.” (San Antonio College Bulletin, Faculty Handbook – January 1995)

Students are required to silence all electronic devices (e.g., pagers, cellular phones, etc.) when in classrooms, laboratories and library.  College Academic Council, 01/2000.

 

 

G.

San Antonio College Attendance Policy: Regular and punctual attendance is required.  A student absent for any reason is responsible for all work missed.  Absences are recorded from the first day of class.  A student absent the equivalent of two weeks of instruction, may be dropped by the instructor with a grade of “W.” Both tardiness and early departure from class are forms of absenteeism.  The instructor establishes the policy with regards for each.
