Wellness is a lifestyle that assists the individual to achieve a high level of well-being by integrating body, mind, and spirit. San Antonio College encourages students and employees to participate in programs, activities, and services that impact the areas of wellness.

San Antonio College Wellness Program has grown from the efforts of a dedicated group of faculty and staff over the years. Administrative support for wellness is visible through the establishment of the Wellness Committee as a standing college committee, funding of the program, and the appointment of a Wellness Coordinator on one class release time.


Current Wellness Challenge

Challenge:  This week as you begin to shop for favorite holiday foods pay more attention to the nutrition information that is found on most food items. Look for items that contain more whole grain and fiber, less sugar and salt and lower levels of saturated fat. Make particular note of the number of serving per package in snack items so that you do not unwillingly eat more calories than you want.

Benefits:

  • Being more aware of ingredients helps lead to healthier eating
  • Reading labels carefully may prevent allergic reactions to various ingredients
  • Awareness of serving size can help reduce holiday weight gain
  • Good nutrition helps promote better health

  • Health Screenings for Faculty, Students, and Staff

    Valuable tests for total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL and LDL ratios, thyroid profiles, complete blood counts, prostrate and ovarian cancer screenings, healthy heart profiles and diabetes management profiles will be available to you at significantly reduced costs. Services will be provided this year by HealthCheckUSA. Upon request, complimentary blood pressure and body mass index (BMI) are available with any test to interested participants.
    The SAC Wellness Team is privileged to be able to provide these valuable health services to you at such affordable prices and it is our hope many of you will be able to take advantage of this great opportunity. San Antonio College Wellness Resources

  • Campus Ministries sponsor seminars, worship services and other activities which stimulate growth in several dimensions, especially the spiritual and social. These include: The Baptist Student Union (525-9954), the Catholic Student Center (736-3752), Church of Christ Student Center (735-8921), and the Methodist Student Center(733-1441).

  • Employee Development provides opportunities for career enchancement and renewal to all employees. 733-2188

  • Employee Tuitution Assistance Program offers funding for credit and continuing education courses.


    The Employee Tuition Assistance Program (ETAP) Application Form can be downloaded using Acrobat Reader at Forms. Step by step instructions are listed on the form.

    SAC employees wanting to attend the same kinesiology activity course for the third time will be allowed to register tuition-free on a “Space-Available” basis. You may begin inquiring about space-available starting Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005.

    To be eligible for this option, SAC employees must first exhaust their ETAP entitlement for the course they want to attend. ETAP will only pay tuition for an employee to attend the same course twice. Further, this option is limited to one-semester-credit-hour kinesiology activity courses (Health and Wellness courses). Employees will attend classes on a Survey status. Attendance and course grade will be recorded on an official Continuing Education Transcript.

    To get started in this process, SAC employees must first obtain an “Admit Slip” from Les Bleamaster, Kinesiology Dept. Chair, or Melinda Jo Rivero-Lara, Dept. Secretary. If space is available, employees will then be referred to the Continuing Education Registration Desk located in Room 202 in the Fletcher Administration Center.

  • Kinesiology and Physical Education Department provides an employee weight room and sets aside certain hours each semester for employee use of the conditioning room and pool. 733-2761.

  • Library 733-2477


  • Student Health Center provides minor illness and emergency care. It also provides verbal and written health counseling. (Chance Academic Center, Room 119, 733-2790)

  • Women's Center sponsors seminars and programs that deal with women's issues. (Moody Learning Center, First Floor, Room 177B, 733 - 2299)

Seven Dimensions of Wellness

San Antonio College Wellness Committee invites you to explore the seven dimensions of wellness. Wellness is a lifelong process that produces a positive state of well-being; a dynamic process of change and growth. Wellness is largely determined by the decisions you make about how to live your life. The dimensions of wellness interact continuously, influencing and being influenced by one another. Individually and collectively, the wellness dimensions are associated with an enhanced quality and quantity of life.

Physical Wellness: includes a healthy approach to exercise, nutrition, drugs & alcohol. Optimal physical health requires eating well, exercising, avoiding harmful habits, making responsible decisions about sex, learning about and recognizing the symptoms of disease, getting regular medical and dental checkups and taking steps to prevent injuries.

Emotional Wellness: includes trust, self-esteem, self-acceptance, self-confidence, self-control, and the ability to bounce back from setbacks and failures. Maintaining emotion wellness requires monitoring and exploring your thoughts or feelings; identifying obstacles to emotional well-being and finding solutions to emotional problems, and if necessary with the help of a therapist.

Spiritual Wellness: is a set of guiding beliefs, principles or values that give meaning and purpose to your life, especially during difficult times; involves the capacity for love, compassion, forgiveness, altruism, and fulfillment. Spiritual wellness not adhere to any particular religion, however, organized religions help many people develop spiritual health, while many others find meaning and purpose in their lives on their own.

Intellectual Wellness: includes the use of and continual striving for information and intellectual growth. An active mind is essential to wellness; it opens to new ideas, has the capacity to question, think critically, and is motivated to master new skills; and includes a sense of humor.

Social Wellness: includes the ability to maintain intimacy. Developing social wellness means learning good communication skills, developing the capacity for intimacy, contributing to your community, accepting others different from yourself, and cultivating a support network of caring friends and/or family members.

Environmental (planetary) Wellness: includes the ability to promote measures that improve the standard of living and quality of health in our environment. The health of the planet depends upon safety of food and water supply, infectious diseases, violence in a society, ultraviolet radiation, air and water pollution, and second hand tobacco smoke.

Occupational Wellness: includes the ability to balance work and leisure time. Striving for occupational wellness adds focus to your life & allows you to find personal satisfaction in your life through work.
