1. Group instruction sessions will be offered at faculty request during each semester.
2. At the beginning of each academic year, the Library Instruction Team will call for volunteer librarians to teach group instruction sessions. The librarians who choose not to teach will participate in group instruction by substituting at the Reference Desk as necessary.
3. The Group Instruction Schedule Folder, containing blank request forms and schedule sheets, will be on file at the Reference Desk.
4. To request a group instruction session, faculty will contact a librarian at the Reference Desk to reserve a specific day and time. Faculty should make group instruction requests at least five working days in advance and will be asked to attend the sessions with their classes. A group instruction session will not be scheduled if the faculty member or substitute will not attend the session with the class.
5. When asked to schedule a group instruction session, the Reference Desk librarian will inform the faculty member that he or a qualified substitute must accompany the class during the session. The librarian will then briefly interview the faculty member, complete a group instruction request form and record the appointment on the schedule sheets. Only two sessions will be scheduled per class period before 7:00 pm. After 7:00 pm Monday - Thursday, only one session per hour will be scheduled.
6. A Library Instruction Committee member will periodically check the Group Instruction Schedule Folder, remove completed request forms, and make teaching assignments. These assignments will be made on a rotating basis with considerations made for constraints such as the Reference Desk schedule, faculty preferences, etc.
7. The scheduler will notify the librarians of assignments by placing completed request forms in their mailboxes. If a Reference Desk substitution is necessary for the session, the committee will notify the substitute librarian by placing a substitute form in his or her mailbox.
8. If the assigned librarian knows of a conflict which will prevent him or her from teaching or substituting at the Reference Desk, the librarian should notify the committee as soon as possible so that another assignment can be made. When an assigned librarian is absent due to illness on the day of the session, she should inform the Reserve Desk staff that 1) she had been assigned a group instruction session that day and 2) where the group instruction request form is located. The Library Instruction Committee will be responsible for alternative arrangements.
9. Prior to the session, the librarian should contact the course instructor to briefly discuss the learning objectives and content for the session.
10. Prior to the session, the librarian may choose to prepare a session handout or to use a previously prepared handout. This handout will be given to the Library Instruction Learning Resource Specialist as soon as possible so that it can be sent to the Printing Office by their deadline (3 days) and can be entered into the Library Instruction database.
11. At least once each semester, each librarian teaching group instruction will distribute student evaluation forms at the end of session. Blank student evaluation forms will be on file at the Reference Desk. Studetns will return completed evaluations to the boxes in the classrooms. Evaluations will be forwarded by the Library Instruction Team to the Dean of Learning Resources.
12. The Library Instruction Committee will compile statistics on group instruction activities and report this information to the Dean of Learning Resources and the Learning Resources Council.
