DEVISE STRATEGY

Once you have defined your topic, you will need to know where to search for additonal information. The sources you use are often determined by the instructor or assignment. You will need to make a list of keywords to search the library catalog, databases, and the Web.

SEARCH SOURCES

Searching these sources can be as easy as using the index of a book or it may involve advanced searching methods used in specialized databases or Web search engines. Remember to use the "Help" button on the databases and search engines. Consult librarians at the reference desk or at Ask a Librarian for assistance in accessing and searching sources.

From the San Antonio College Library (http://www.accd.edu/sac/library/) home page use your list of keywords to search in the following sources which are available 24/7 to registered San Antonio College Students.

Click on Books & Media to search for books, government documents, microforms, audiovisuals, and electronic/digital resources. You may search by author, title, subject, and keyword. On the keyword search page on the right are examples of boolean operators (and, or, and not) and wildcards (*) (**) (?).

To access only online full text electronic books, go to netLibrary (eBooks).

Examples of keyword searches:

  • ethics and aristotle
  • euthanasia or assisted suicide
  • genetic engineering
  • stem cell* and research

Examples of subject searches:

  • Assisted suicide -- Moral and ethical aspects
  • Human cloning -- Moral and ethical aspects
  • Medical ethics
  • Pro-choice movement -- United States
  • Pro-life movement -- United States
