II. Expected
Program/Unit Learning Outcomes:
Students who successfully complete the Associate
of Arts in Music degree will be able to:
á Perform
repertoire on a primary instrument at a level commensurate with junior-level
peers at 4-year institutions
á Demonstrate
high artistic standards with regard to musicianship, technique, stage presence,
proficiency, interpretation, and preparation of repertoire on primary
instrument
á Acquire
keyboard skills covering the following elements: scales, cadences,
sight-reading, melodic harmonization, transposition and piece preparation
á Perform in an
ensemble situation with attention focused on tone quality, intonation, proper
technique, accurate rhythm and stylistic performance practice
á Analyze pieces
from western Classical music literature by considering such factors as
notation, key, meter, form, chord function, cadence, phrase structure,
modulation, and voice leading
á Perform aural
skills, specifically melodic and harmonic dictation, sight- singing and
clapping of rhythms, and aural identification of diatonic, chromatic, and
modulatory excerpts
in terms of melody, harmony, cadence, mode, meter, and
chords
á Demonstrate
knowledge of stylistic periods, genres, composers, major musical works,
listening parameters and musical terms as they relate to western Classical
music and other
American musical genres
á Exhibit
effective written and oral communication skills regarding musical compositions,
performances, and experiences
á Apply and
synthesize musical knowledge (applied, historical and cultural, theoretical and
structural) to performances, both as a participant and as an observer, and to
compositions
á Demonstrate a
commitment to offering community service through performance.
Students taking Humanities and Music survey
courses will be able to:
á Understand and
appreciate diverse artistic styles, cultures and history

á In the case of
Humanities courses, identify artistic and cultural characteristics and legacies

A. To ensure that the Music and Humanities Department

theories

understanding of terminology, literature, aesthetics, systems, themes,
