I.          Catalog description:

MUEN 1122, Jazz Ensemble (Formerly MUSI 1122)

(1-0-3)

The jazz ensemble performs standard jazz and popular repertoire.  The student is introduced to improvisational techniques.  There will be three rehearsal hours per week.

II.        Requirements: 

            A.        To enroll in this course, an audition or the instructorÕs consent is required.

            B.        Failure to make a productive grade (a C or higher) in this course in a given semester will result in the music department prohibiting that student from enrolling in private lessons courses for the following semester. 

III.       Text and other materials students are required to provide:

A.        Instrument (some of the larger and more expensive instruments are available for loan through the Music Department).

B.        Pencil, No. 2, with eraser

IV.       Methods of instruction:

A.        Lecture and demonstration

B.        Warm-up and intonation drills

C.        Supervised drill on selected musical compositions.

D.        Performance of musical compositions

E.         Sight reading

V.        Course grade:

A.        Components used in determining 50% of the semester grade include the following:

1.         Attentiveness

2.              Behavior

3.              Preparation of musical material.

B.        Attendance at rehearsals and performances is 50% of the grade. 

VI.       Course content:

A.        Intonation studies

B.        Scale studies

C.        Rhythmic studies

D.        Music for performance

VII.      Performance objectives:

A.        Performances that are in tune and rhythmically accurate

B.        Performances that display musical understanding of articulation, phrasing and dynamics

C.        Performances that reflect the intentions of the composer and interpretation of the conductor

D.        Performances that are aurally and visually satisfying to the audience

VIII.    College Policies:

A.        Academic Dishonesty Policy: Students may be subject to disciplinary proceedings resulting in an academic penalty for academic dishonesty.  Academic dishonesty
includes, but is not limited to, cheating on a test, plagiarism and collusion.  For additional information, refer to the Student Code of Conduct in the San Antonio College Bulletin.

B.        Children on Campus: Students are urged not to bring children to either class or a lab.  Minors under the age of 12 must not be left unattended on campus.

C.             ADA Statement for Students Requiring Special Accommodations:

As per Section 504 on the Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, if accommodation is needed, students must make the request through disABILITY Support Services (DSS Office), CAC 124C, phone# 733-2347.  Also, students must notify their professor if any special accommodation is needed. 

D.            Student Responsibilities: The student is responsible for ensuring that he/she is familiar with school regulations and procedures as described in the San Antonio College Bulletin and for complying with these regulations.  All SAC policies and procedures will be enforced in this course.  The student is also responsible for punctuality in attendance, proper conduct, and academic integrity.  It is the student's responsibility to contact their professor regarding absences and any other problems that may affect class performance.  If the student decides to drop the course, he/she must do so officially with the proper forms processed through Administration and Records.  Students who stop coming to class without an official drop will receive an "F" as a final grade.  NOTE: Grades of W or F will not be changed at a later date.
