II.   Additional comments/requirements:

a.)   While the syllabus requires scales of two octaves, I will require at least one scale of three octaves (major AND minor) with the accompanying arpeggio(s) - majors only.

b.)   I will place a strong emphasis on effective "practice technique" and problem solving abilities.   After these skills are introduced, you will be asked to demonstrate how to solve a difficult problem on the cello without assistance from me.

c.)   I value the concept of steady rhythm/pulse as much as intonation and tone quality.   I will ask you to practice with a metronome and will use one in the lessons if needed.   If you do not own a metronome please get one immediately and USE IT.   They can be purchased for under $15.

III.   A note about practicing:

It is widely understood that steady practice over several days is much more effective that intense practice for one day.   You should take out the cello and practice for a minimum of one hour EVERY DAY.   On days when it is possible, practice for two or three hours.   During this time try to maintain focus and concentration (no TV in the background) and if you find yourself distracted, take a five minute break and then return to the cello.

Understand that it is impossible to "cram" for your cello lesson, jury, or performance like it might be for a written exam.   Don't try it!   The only way to make real progress is to practice every single day, much like an athlete training his or her body for a marathon.   You will be surprised how much better you get if you adhere to this concept, and once you notice how easy things become you will want to practice even more!
