COURSE DESCRIPTION (for the complete syllabus go to the Department Web site)
Humanities 13o1 is an interdisciplinary survey of the humanistic tradition from early times to the Byzantine Period (500 C.E.) from a global and multicultural perspective. The student will gain perspectives of the humanistic tradition by focusing on the creative legacies of early civilizations in Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia: literature, philosophy, history, architecture, visual arts and music.

OBJECTIVES
Internationalized curriculum: This course partially fulfills the requirements for an International Studies Certificate. For more information, contact Dr. Jonathan Lee, Facilitator for International Curriculum Development, at 733-2565.

This course provides a survey of the world’s ancient civilizations using an interdisciplinary approach. Students will become familiar with a fundamental body of knowledge from the disciplines of history, anthropology, archaeology, visual and performing arts, philosophy, religion, and others that will allow for an understanding of both Western and nonwestern civilizations. In addition, by focusing on the interrelationship between those who create art and socio-historical forces in a given culture at a given time, the course will encourage students to gain a more complete understanding of the creative and philosophical processes of the past and their influences on modern society.

Class starts on January 12, 2009 - I will be taking roll starting on this date. Attendance is both login-in and timely response to course assignments. Just logging into the course does not count as being "in attendance".

January 21 or 22 at 6:30 pm - choose a date on the discussion board
in Room 204, McAllister Fine Arts Building*
Attendance of the on campus orientation is required for all students enrolled in this course. *Arrangements will be made for those outside the greater San Antonio area, however, you must complete the orientation on-line. Please contact me for information.

How will the course work?: Remember the course design is different with each course- even though we use the same software.
This is an on-line course, which may not be for you if you are not a self starter or can make yourself do work on your own. Plan on 4-6 hours and post when assignments are due.
You can contact me any time - but,you do not have the face to face contact that you have in an on-campus class. I can assist you, but I can not do the readings and postings for you.
This is an interactive course and you are required to do activities twice a week.

Humanities, just like the other social sciences, is a reading and writing course - be prepared and plan on  spending 4-6 hours a week for this course. Discussion Board discussions are due on Wednesday and  Assignments are due on Sundays. Please make sure that you have regular access to a computer - it is essential as one of my students learned this semester.
Having said this - this course is great because it will introduce you to aspects of modern times you will not find anywhere else. Come and explore!!

Instructor feedback in the course consists of individual and group feedback discussing assignments, papers, exams, discussion board postings and the grading thereof. This is a virtual classroom and I check my e-mails daily. Our discussions and use of the web make this an interactive course. It is important to come to the orientation to learn about Blackboard Vista and how to access feedback, grades, etc.
Students will be given opportunities to evaluate this online course periodically during the semester.

Not familiar with Blackboard Vista? check it out the tutorial when you log in and come to the orientation.
