COURSE DESCRIPTION (for the syllabus go to the Department Web site)
This course is an interdisciplinary and multicultural study of art in modern culture that introduces the students to the philosophical, aesthetic, social and technical revolutions of the recent past which shape our contemporary world. Global cultural expressions of Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia since the eighteenth century in art, music, literature, drama, and the media will be analyzed in their historical context.
OBJECTIVES
1. To gain an overview of the development of the modern world, specifically the artistic achievements, the history and the cultures.
2. To survey different aspects of human achievement starting with the 18th century, how they are discarded, reinforced, altered or modified.
3. To be able to identify crosscurrents among art works of different cultures and to see trans- historical links between past and present.
4. To gain an understanding of the diversity of ideas and practices found in human societies around the world, in the past and today.
Class starts on August 24 , 2009- I will be taking roll starting on this date. Attendance is both login-in and timely posting of course assignments. Just logging into the course does not count as being "in attendance". The only time I will drop a student is the day before census day.

Attendance of the on campus orientation is required for all students enrolled in this course. *Arrangements will be made for those outside the greater San Antonio area, however, you must complete the orientation on-line. Please contact me for information.

How will the course work?: Remember the course design is different with each course- even though we use the same software.
This is an on-line course, which may not be for you if you are not a self starter or can make yourself do work on your own. Plan on 4-6 hours and post when assignments are due.
You can contact me any time - but,you do not have the face to face contact that you have in an on-campus class. I can assist you, but I can not do the readings and postings for you.
This is an interactive course and you are required to do activities twice a week.
Humanities, just like the other social sciences, is a reading and writing intense course - be prepared and plan on spending 4-6 hours a week for this course. Bulletin Board discussions are due on Wednesday and Assignments are due on Sundays. Please make sure that you have regular access to a computer - it is essential as one of my students learned this semester.
Having said this - this course is great because it will introduce you to aspects of modern times you will not find anywhere else. Come and explore!!
Instructor feedback in the course consists of individual and group feedback discussing assignments, papers, exams, discussion board postings and the grading thereof. This is a virtual classroom and I check my e-mails daily. Our discussions and use of the web make this an interactive course. It is important to come to the orientation to learn about Blackboard Vista and how to access feedback, grades, etc.
Students will be given opportunities to evaluate this online course periodically during the semester.
Not familiar with Blackboard Vista? click on the instructions when your first log in - you need to come to the orientation to get an overview.
