Standarized Exams

Students in the Nursing Program will be required to take nationally normed / standardized exams and to make a statisfactory score on such tests. In the last semester of the nursing curriculum students will be required to take a comprehensive exam. Meeting satisfactory requirements on this Exit Exam is required to be eligible to take the NCLEX-RN examination.

The fee for the examination will be added to the tuition bill each semester that a student is enrolled in the program.

  • Mid-program Exam at end of second semester.
  • Comprehensive Exit exam during last semester of nursing program.
Exam Testing Procedures

For standarized examinations:

  • Picture identification of students will be required for admission to the test.
  • Students must test at the assigned time and be on time.
  • Students must submit the printed results of the exam at the conclusion of the exam to their advisor.
  • Students must attain an acceptable level of performance as defined by the department.
    • If a passing score is not obtained on the exam, the student will meet with his/her faculty advisor to develop a plan for remediation.
Program Exit Exam Policy

Students will take the Exit Exam in the final term of study in which the student completes the degree plan.

  • If a passing score is not obtained on the exam, the student is required to meet with his/her faculty advisor to interpret the exam results, develop a plan for remediation, and complete a formal NCLEX review prior to retesting.
  • If the student scores less than 850 on the exam on the second attempt, the student must complete all 50 Elsevier case studies with a score of 80%.

The student's licensure application will not be approved or certified by the Department Chair unless the exam criteria is met.

  • The student is not eligible for graduation and the Department Chair will not certify the licensure application until successful completion of the requirements for the exit exam. However, the student may participate in pinning ceremony upon completion of all nursing courses.
  • The cost of retesting, remediation, review courses and other expenses are the sole responsibility of the student.
  • Once the student meets the exit exam criteria, the student's licensure application can be submitted upon recommendation of the Department Chair.

Summary of process for students who score < 850 on the exam.

  • Exit exam
    • Students take version 1 of the exit exam. If the score is <850:
      • Student will secure test packet from Skills Lab on posted date and time.
      • Student will schedule an appointment with advisor.
      • Faculty will interpret the test results with student.
      • The faculty will complete an exit exam counseling form and identify remediatin plan to include Elsevier case studies on areas of weakness. The counseling form will be attached to the advisement record.
      • After the student has met with faculty the student may receive formal remediation options from Mr. Kuoni to take a formal review course.
      • After completion of formal review, student will fax a certificate to Mr. Kuoni.
      • When the fax is received, the student will be assigned a time to take exit exam Version 2.
      • If the student makes <850 the 2nd time, the student must complete 50 case studies before they can graduate.
  • Mid-curricular exam
    • Student will take exam.
    • Student will meet with advisor if score <850.
    • Faculty must complete the mid-curricular counseling form and identify Elsevier case studies which must be completed before student can register the next semester.
