Attendance

The Department of Nursing Education follows the SAC policy regarding attendance/absence:

"Regular and punctual attendance at all classes and laboratories, day and/or evening, is required. A student absent for any reason is responsible for all work missed. Absences of each student are recorded without exception from the official date of his/her enrollment. A student who has accumulated absences equivalent to two weeks of instruction may be dropped with a grade of W. Since tardiness is a form of absenteeism, the instructor may exercise the right to establish a written policy that equals three tardies to one absence."

Attendance Policy for Clinical Courses

Students are expected to attend all clinical experiences.

  • A student absent from clinical will receive a grade of zero ("0") for the day.
  • A clinical absence cannot be made up.
  • A student who will be late or absent must call the assigned unit at least 30 minutes prior to the beginning of the clinical day.
  • Students will receive a weekly grade. All grades will be averaged at the end of the course for the final clinical grade.
  • A violation of Minimum Safe Standards will result in a grade of zero (0) for that clinical day.

On clinical days used for skills day or assigned hospital experiences other than direct patient care, the student will receive a maximum of 85% for clinical implementation. Additional points may be received or deleted related to assignments.

For those courses with a single, long clinical day, this is equivalent to two clinical days. If a student has an absence on a long clinical day and wishes to use the Convocation Card, the card will cover ONE of the "two" clinical days.

Students are expected to respond to the instructor's request for conferences regarding clinical/academic work.

At the end of the course, students will schedule an appointment with the instructor of record to review the final clinical evaluation.
