Functional Capabilities
spacer The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA)
    This act defines a person with a disability as anyone who
    • has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of such an individual;
    • has a record of such an impairment, or
    • is regarded as having such an impairment.
Nursing Students Requiring Special Accommodations:
    Only students diagnosed with disabilities covered by the ADA may be allowed special accommodations in the nursing classes.

    The disABILITY Student Services (DSS) provides accommodations, modifications, counseling and services that are reasonable and can be provided under provisions of the ADA.  Students with questions concerning their ability to meet program requirements should contact a DSS counselor prior to applying to the nursing program.

    As per Section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the American Disabilities Act (1970), if accommodation is needed, students must make the request through the Office of disABILITY Student Services, CAC 124C.  Phone:  210.733.2347.

    It is the student's responsibility to provide the instructor in each course for which the student is approved with the official letter from DSS to qualify for services.  It is not automatically passed from course to course. Faculty can not grant requests without the letter.

    English as a second language does not constitute a disability under the ADA.
