The San Antonio
College Phi Theta Kappa student honors society will hold an Xtreme
Popular Culture Fair on Saturday, Nov. 20, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. on campus
near the Candler Physical Education Center, Planetarium, and in the
adjacent parking lots (Lots 20 and 21). The event is free and open
to the public and will feature entertainment, food, music, demonstrations,
and information about popular culture, student financial aid, and
health issues.
"
Our goal is to introduce alternative youth's pop culture to the community," said
Lisa Chapman, President of Phi Theta Kappa, Beta Nu Chapter. She
added, "This culture normally has a negative connotation.
We are trying to put a positive spin on it and show today's youth
that
they can maintain their individuality through the expression of
pop culture and continue their education."
The Xtreme Popular Culture Fair will include rap and hip-hop musicians
(including the group "Paint by Numbers"), a performance
by the San Antonio College American Sign Language Choir, a Comedy
Club performance, and entertainers such as break dancers and belly
dancers. There will be demonstrations by Brazilian martial artists,
graffiti art, and skateboard and BMX bike exhibitions by VClub
Clothing, BMX Demo, and Rex Ramps.
An open mike will be available for a reading poetry, prose and
short stories. Some of the booth vendors will include L&M Bookstore,
