Applications Are Due Feb. 3

The San Antonio College Women's Center invites high school seniors to apply for $130,000 in scholarships to be awarded at the 2005 Young Women's/Young Men's Conference on Saturday, March 5, 8 a.m. - noon, in McAllister Auditorium. Registration and check-in is 7 - 8 a.m. The deadline for scholarship applications is Feb. 3.

The Alamo Community College District Foundation, the San Antonio Livestock Exhibition, and San Antonio College are providing scholarships.

The keynote speaker will be Spurs star Bruce Bowen, named to the NBA's All Defensive Team for the last four seasons. Other conference speakers include Nancy Gonzalez, co-anchor of "Good Morning San Antonio," and A.J. Rodriguez, President of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

To be eligible for a scholarship, current high school seniors must plan to enroll full time during the Fall 2005 semester at any college in the Alamo Community College District (San Antonio College, Palo Alto College, St. Philip's College, Northwest Vista College).

Students should submit an application, transcript, and essay by the deadline on Thursday, Feb. 3. Applications are available from high school counselors, the SAC Women's Center, or on-line at http://www.accd.edu/sac/students/wc/yw-ym.htm.

The Young Women's/Young Men's Conference is held annually with a mission to bring together high school young women and men (11th and 12th grades) for a day of information focusing on self-esteem and leadership development in order to expose them to enhanced career and educational options. The conference also presents positive role models to offer messages on the importance of higher education.

The high school with the most students at the conference will be awarded a trophy and that school's counselor will receive a prize and the school will be awarded the Conference Spirit Trophy for exhibit in the school's display case for one year.

More than 500 students and their parents and counselors from 40 San Antonio and surrounding area high schools and community agencies attended last year's conference. Eighty percent of the seniors who attended the conference were enrolled in an ACCD college by Fall 2004.

For a scholarship application or more information about the conference, contact the SAC Women's Center at 210-733-2299 or womenctr@accd.edu.
