The San Antonio College Foreign Languages/ESOL Department will offer a course in Chinese this fall semester for the first time. SAC is the only college in the Alamo Community College District to offer Chinese.
Beginning Chinese I (CHIN 1411) will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:50 a.m.-12:05 p.m. or Tuesday evenings 6-10 p.m., in addition to three hours of required language lab per week. Students will learn to speak and to read and write traditional Chinese characters.
"We offer this course because the community has requested it," said Dr. Anna Budzinski, Chairperson of the Foreign Languages/ESOL Department. She added, "The world is getting smaller, and some people may find employment and educational opportunities in the Chinese speaking world, as well as benefiting from the cultural experience."
Instructor Len McClure, who has lived in Hong Kong, Singapore, and China for more than 20 years, said, "Chinese is not the difficult language that most people think it is. For example, there is no conjugation of verbs. Also, writing characters is fun, and there's a logic to it."
Students may register by web or phone for fall semester classes now through August 26, and new students should allow time to talk with a counselor. For more information about registration, call 733-2225. For more information about the Beginning Chinese class, contact Dr. Budzinski at 733-2626.
