WHAT
* An event titled "Dating Violence Awareness: Control Isn't Love" will be held at San Antonio College to provide awareness and prevention information to students about this serious problem.
* The free event is sponsored by service-learning students in the Psychology 2306, Human Sexuality class, in conjunction with agencies, college departments, and student organizations.*
* The Dating Violence Awareness event will provide awareness and information to students about dating violence and how to recognize the signs of control, jealousy, verbal abuse, and physical violence and how to form healthier relationships.
* Self-defense demonstrations and free HIV testing will be available. In addition, games, prizes (T-shirts and flashlight keychains), giveaways, and printed handouts will be available.
WHY:
* "Dating violence is a serious issue in Texas," said Dr. Pamela Hill, Professor of Psychology at San Antonio College, whose students will be participating in the event.
She added, "The Texas Council on Family Violence and the Texas Attorney General's office report that 75 percent of 16-24 year-old Texans have personally experienced dating violence or know someone who has."
WHEN/WHERE:
* Monday, October 16, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
* San Antonio College, 1300 San Pedro Ave.
in the mall area between the Moody Learning Center and the Loftin Student Center. (In case of bad weather, the event will be held in the Loftin Student Center Fiesta Room.)

* Participating agencies: Family Violence Prevention Services of San Antonio, Family Assistance Crisis Team of SAPD, Community Clinic/Project SAVE (free HIV testing), Beat AIDS, Metropolitan Health District - HIV/EBI Unit and Project Worth, Planned Parenthood of South Central Texas and San Antonio, Rape Crisis Center, KISS 99.5 Prize Pig Patrol, and others.
* San Antonio College groups: San Antonio College Department of Public Safety, Gay and Lesbian Association, Kinesiology Department (self-defense demonstrations), Peer Educators, Psychology 2306 Human Sexuality students, and the SAC Women's Center.
* The event is funded by Learn and Serve America.
