Among colleges granting associate's degrees to Hispanics in all disciplines, San Antonio College awarded 394 degrees and ranks 29th in the United States (out of 105 institutions), 1st in San Antonio and 7th in Texas.
In addition, San Antonio College awarded 285 associate's degrees in Nursing, ranking 7th in the United States (out of 43 institutions) and 1st in Texas. (In associate's degrees awarded to Hispanics, the SAC Nursing Program ranks 3rd in the United States.)
San Antonio College also awarded 304 associate's degrees in the Health Professions & Related Clinical Sciences, ranking 36th in the United States (out of 40 institutions), 1st in San Antonio and 2nd in Texas.
In associate's degrees for Communication, Journalism and related programs, San Antonio College awarded 15 degrees, tying for 43rd ranking in the United States with seven other colleges, 1st in San Antonio and 3rd in Texas.
In the article "Interpreting the Numbers," Victor Borden and Pamela Brown write that approximately 1.4 million associate's degrees and certificates were awarded in 2004-2005, "just slightly less than the total number of bachelor's degrees awarded in the same year."
They add, "The widespread locations, flexible scheduling, and increasing use of distance learning technologies enable a wide range of learners to pursue certificates and degrees at any point in their busy lives. With the fast-changing demands of the 21st century workforce, one- and two-year academic credentials are likely to play an increasing role in career and professional development."
