WHAT:
* Twenty-nine high school students (10th - 12th grades) will graduate from San Antonio College's summer Early Development of General Engineering (EDGE) Program, which offers instruction and a special environment for students interested in engineering.
WHY:
* The EDGE Program is one of the ways San Antonio College is addressing the national crisis in engineering education: engineering degrees nationally dropped 20 percent from 1986 to 1999, and only 15 percent of high school graduates are prepared to enroll in engineering programs.

BACKGROUND:
* The graduates will have completed an eight-week program (with supervised study and student success sessions and guest speakers) in one of two tracks:
1) College Algebra and Introduction to Engineering, or
2) Computer Literacy and Introduction to Engineering
* Students earn five college credits that can apply to an Associate degree at San Antonio College or can be transferred to UTSA or other four-year institutions.
* Admission is open to 10th - 12th grade students, based on academic standing, at a cost of $25 for an administrative fee. Tuition and textbooks are free. Enrollment rose from 20 students in 2003 to 29 this summer.
* School Districts represented are American Montessori Society, Archdiocese of San Antonio, Comfort, Judson, La Vernia, Lackland, Marion, North East, Northside, San Antonio, Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City, and Southwest independent school districts.
