On Wednesday, Nov. 29, at 6 p.m. in McAllister Auditorium at San Antonio College, Dr. David A. Stevens will speak on the topic "What Does How the Mind Works Tell Us about How We Should Teach Elementary Math?" Previewing of software begins at 5 p.m.    

This talk is as a part of the Excellence in Education Lecture Series at San Antonio College, which is sponsored by the Continuing Education Network's Center for Educator Preparation and Southwest Academic Solutions.  The presentation is free and open to the public.

Dr. Stevens is a developmental psychologist and cognitive scientist, whose work is based on the idea that children with learning difficulties often have underdeveloped cognitive abilities.   He will give an overview of key cognitive science findings and examples of how to improve elementary math instruction and curriculum design.  The presentation will focus on the specific trouble spots students have with the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills.

He received a Ph.D. in Human Development and Psychology from Harvard University and is the Executive Director of the Cognitive Development Center of Lexington.  He has dedicated his career to designing and implementing programs to improve the cognitive abilities of students with learning difficulties.
