.San Antonio, TX, March 22, 2006) This year marks 40 years of college radio for KSYM 90.1 FM, located inside the Radio, Television and Film (RTVF) department at San Antonio College. Billed as "Your Only Alternative," the station gives students real-world radio experience and plays a rare unrivalled mix of music not found anyplace else.
A large part of KSYM's funding comes from underwriting and listener contributions, thus the annual pledge drive is set for March 27 - April 2, 2006. Starting this year, pledges will also be accepted online. Visit www.accd.edu/sac/ksym/pledges.htm or call 210-733-2800 for details. With a goal of $75,000, funds raised will help KSYM cover the costs of music licensing fees, the offering of KSYM programs online (web-casting) and station memberships into various broadcasting and academic associations.
With a $35 contribution, donors will receive a KSYM T-shirt; and for $50, a KSYM cap.
During Pledge Drive week, Guest DJs will be scheduled to accompany the regular on-air talent, and are to include: Shelly Miles and Randy Beamer from WOAI-TV, Ron O'Brien and "J.D" from KZEP-FM, Chris Sufentes and "Quinn" from KISS-FM, and Eric Armenta from KABB-TV. Also scheduled is a cast of RTVF alumni, including Arch Campbell of WRC-TV (NBC) in Washington, D.C., as well as several current and former KSYM jocks.
The first community college radio station in Texas, KSYM signed on in 1966 at San Antonio College, housed in McAllister Fine Arts Center until 1988 when it moved into the Bennett House that was renovated for use as the SAC RTF Hall. In its early years, KSYM offered only weekend programming; but today, KSYM 90.1 FM operates 24-7 in a fully outfitted professional broadcast studio inside the newly established Longwith Radio Television and Film building located at W. Courtland Pl. and Howard Street on the SAC campus.
The eclectic sounds of KSYM include everything from rock 'n' roll, rockabilly, country, blues, jazz, hip hop, alternative rock and retro to Cajun, zydeco, brass bands, conjunto, Gospel, polka and more. For more information, tune to 90.1 FM or visit www.ksym.org.
