Leading Literacy Expert Dr. Marilyn Jager Adams
Speaks at San Antonio College


(San Antonio, TX, May 15, 2006) - One of the most influential people in the national reading policy arena, author and educational research scientist Dr. Marilyn Jager Adams will speak at San Antonio College on Tuesday, June 6, in McAllister Auditorium from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public.
 
Dr. Adams will speak on her current research in the relationship between fluency and reading comprehension. Recipient of the American Educational Research Association's Sylvia Scribner Award for Outstanding Research, she is the most quoted author in reading research.
 
“Dr. Adams is internationally regarded for her research and applied work in the area of cognition and education,” said Mona Aldana-Ramirez, coordinator of Center for Educator Preparation at San Antonio College.  “She is a brilliant and rigorous scientist with a passion for helping kids.”
 
Dr. Adams' contributions include the landmark book Beginning to Read: Thinking and Learning About Print, as well as Phonemic Awareness in Young Children (a co-authored book) and Senior author of an award-winning, standards-based literacy assessment kit, “Fox in a Box.” She has designed effective instructional programs for readers of all levels and is also Senior Literacy Advisor for Instruction to PBS’ programs “Sesame Street” and “Between the Lions.” She is Chief Scientist at Soliloquy Learning Inc. and Adams holds a Ph.D. from Brown University in cognitive psychology and developmental psychology.
 
The first speaker in SAC’s Excellence in Education Lecture Series, Dr. Adams’ presentation is sponsored by the Center for Educator Preparation at San Antonio College and Southwest Academic Solutions.
 
By attending the event, educators can receive 1.5 hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) units, and have the opportunity to preview an innovative reading fluency software program based on Dr. Adam’s research. Also, following the speech, she will be available to sign previously purchased copies of her books.
