SAC Receives Major Grant to Increase Number of Nurses

.
The San Antonio College Nursing Education Program has received $290,945 for the first year of a three-year grant to total $871,267 aimed at increasing the number of highly qualified registered nurses, particularly among minority and educationally disadvantaged students.   The Department of Health and Human Services' Health Resources & Services Administration awarded the grant.

"This grant provides an exciting avenue for San Antonio College to increase the number of trained nurses for the community, while at the same time reaching out to minority and disadvantaged students who might not otherwise have the opportunity to become nurses," said Dr. Robert E. Zeigler, President.

The grant will have three focus areas, including recruitment activities, scholarships and stipends, and retention activities.

Recruitment activities will include attending high school career fairs and offering field trips and on-site tours to introduce students to a nursing career.  In addition, the Nursing Education Department will offer the Certified Nurses Assistant (CNA) Program, a summer college credit and certificate ladder of courses that expose students to the clinical setting and provide a skill for earning income while attending school.  The CNA includes a course in "Success Strategies for Nursing" that emphasizes study skills strategies as well as courses in Medical Terminology and Pharmacology Math to help improve the success of pre-nursing students.

Scholarships will be awarded to full-time students enrolled in the Nursing Education Program, and stipends will be available for students enrolled in the pre-nursing summer programs and for those taking pharmacology math, medical terminology and NCLEX review.

Retention activities will include success strategies courses and Health Care Spanish, supplemental study lessons, advisors for at-risk students, remediation counseling, exam review sessions, professional development for nursing faculty in alternative learning and other strategies, and faculty incentives to revise curricula implementing retention strategies in the classroom.
