Dr. Reginald T.W. Nichols, City Year San Antonio Speaks on Community during African American Read-In San Antonio College Tuesday, Feb. 28, 10:50 a.m.
WHAT:
African American Read-In celebrating literacy and literature, sponsored by the SAC Black History Month Planning Committee, English Department and Student Financial Aid Office.
WHO:
Dr. Reggie Nichols, Executive Director of City Year San Antonio, a part of AmeriCorps, will provide the Keynote Address, "Celebrating Community."
Founded on the belief that "young people in service could be a powerful resource for addressing our nation's most pressing issues," the mission of the City Year non-profit organization is "to build democracy through citizen service, civic leadership and social entrepreneurship." Also, as a Fellow with the W.K. Kellogg International Leadership Program, Nichols has worked with organizations and leaders around the world to increase leadership and diversity for youth.
Alex Bernal, SAC English Department Chair, will announce winners of the Sixth Annual Black History Month Essay Competition. Scholarship awards include three 3rd place prizes of $300 each, two 2nd place prizes of $350 each, and one 1st place prize of $400.
Also, student Gayle Brown from the Black History Month Planning Committee will offer a selected reading, and Music student Michael Moore will play a trombone solo.
