WHAT:
* Twenty-eight high school students (10th - 12th grades) from San Antonio College's summer Early Development of General Engineering (EDGE) Program, which offers instruction and a special environment for students interested in engineering, will participate in two important events next week:
1) Conduct their final project "Bridge Design, Construction, and Testing," and
2) Participate in the EDGE Program's Graduation Ceremony.
WHY:
* The EDGE Program is one of the ways San Antonio College is addressing the national crisis in engineering education: engineering degrees nationally dropped 20 percent from 1986 to 1999, and only 15 percent of high school graduates are prepared to enroll in engineering programs.
WHEN/WHERE:
* Tuesday, July 24, 9 a.m. - "Bridge Design, Construction & Testing"
Location: San Antonio College, Chance Academic Center, Room 244
* Thursday, July 26, 1 p.m. - Graduation Ceremony
Location: San Antonio College, McAllister Auditorium (corner Courtland Pl. & San Pedro Ave.)
WHO - at Graduation:
* Dr. Dan Dimitriu, Coordinator, Engineering Program
* Dr. Kristine Clark, Executive Vice President - Guest Speaker
* Student speakers from Brackenridge High School:
- Kelly V. Rada
- Franc S. Castro
* Student graduates and their parents
Editors' Note: Student Stephanie Flores (Fox Tech High School) will be available for interviews in Spanish.
BACKGROUND:
* The graduates will have completed an eight-week program (with supervised study and student success sessions and guest speakers) in one of two tracks:
1) College Algebra and Introduction to Engineering, or
2) Computer Literacy and Introduction to Engineering
* Students earn five college credits that can apply toward an Associate degree at San Antonio College or can be transferred to UTSA or other four-year institutions.
* High schools represented are Thomas Jefferson, Providence, Communications Arts, Brackenridge, Highlands, Madison, Taft, Fox Tech, Clark, Burbank, Health Careers, Stevens, Roosevelt, Warren, and Rainbow Hills Baptist.
* The program is a bridge between high school and the college freshman year, with a cost of $25 for an administrative fee. Tuition and textbooks are free. The U.S. Department of Education and the ACCD Foundation fund the program.
