SAC's Project Cuidar Accepting Applications Through April 30
for Summer Nursing Program

The San Antonio College Nursing Education Program is accepting applications now through April 20 from Bexar County high school seniors and current SAC students for a summer academic program titled Project Cuidar.  For qualified students, scholarships and stipends are available to cover the cost of instruction, textbooks, and a certification exam.

The program, to be held June 4 - July 11, is designed to prepare minority and first-generation-in-college students to take the state Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) examination, find employment, and eventually pursue a career in Nursing.  In addition to the CNA course, students will take a course in Medical Terminology.

"These courses will enable the students to find employment and to have a career ladder approach to nursing education," said Sheryd Jackson, Nursing Professor and Program Coordinator.

She added, "Nationally, there is a shortage of nurses, and it is predicted that in the next 10 years there will be a crisis as the Baby Boomer generation heads to old age and retirement.  As the largest associate degree nursing program in the state of Texas, we are committed to preparing RNs to meet the ever-growing shortage."

A Nursing Workforce Diversity Grant from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration provides funding for the program.

Students must be U.S. citizens, pass a criminal background check and drug test, show proof of immunizations, complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to show financial need, and have take Health Care Provider CPR - a course which Nursing Continuing Education will offer on May 12, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Anyone interested in enrolling should contact Lupe at 733-2371.  Information about the program and an application are also available at www.accd.edu/sac/nursing
