Grand Opening for Seguir Adelante Community Center

Held This Morning at 10:30 a.m. 

WHAT:  
* San Antonio College will hold a Grand Opening Ceremony for the Seguir Adelante Community Center, which is designed to provide a variety of family services and short-term training and employment programs and college information.

* The Seguir Adelante Center is a part of the San Antonio College Services for Women and Non-Traditional Students.  It is a one-stop delivery service center for improving basic academic skills and providing access to post-secondary educational opportunities for low income public housing residents, welfare-to-work clients and other low-to-moderate income community members with a focus on families from neighborhoods surrounding the college.

* The Center building was renovated and expanded from an existing building, with grants from the Hispanic-Serving Institutions Assisting Communities and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. 

* Partners include the City of San Antonio Office of Community Initiatives, AVANCE, UU Housing Assistance Corp., San Antonio Housing Authority, Parent Child Incorporated, Travis Elementary School, and Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union.

* The Center offers a comprehensive family strengthening, youth and workforce development, and training services with the goal of improving the family's economic stability.  Family members can receive information on college and workforce opportunities and transition services to improve or increase academic and work force development skills.

WHEN/ WHERE:           
* Time:  Thursday, March 22, 10:30 a.m.
* Location:  Seguir Adelante Community Center, 703 Howard (corner of Evergeen and Howard) on the San Antonio College campus
* Parking:  Limited reserved parking in Lot 27, west of the Center.
* Note:  In case of rain, the event will move inside the Center; otherwise, it will be held under a tent outside.

Note:  Preceding the comments, the Travis Elementary School Student Council will sing.

Notes:  A Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony will follow the remarks, then a tour of the Center.

BACKGROUND:    
Some of the services of the Seguir Adelante Center include:
       
* Family Economic Success Activities:  workshops on Literacy and Money Management, Home-buying, Basic Computer Skills (typing/keyboarding), Basic Academic Skills Upgrading, Individual Development Account, Academic Advisement, and Community Outreach (the Women Empowered Conference)

* Family Well-Being Activities:  workshops on Parenting (English & Spanish), Life Coping Skills, Self-Esteem Building, and College Preparation

* Work Force Development Activities:  Job Search Assistance, Job Lead Referrals, Resume Building, and Employment Application Preparation

* Accelerated Programs in Administrative Assistant Field:  Marketable Computer Skills (earning college credit):  keyboarding, document formatting, Windows XP, MS Word, Outlook, Excel
