SAC to Hold 13th Annual Multicultural Conference

The 13th Annual Multicultural Conference at San Antonio College will be held April 24-26, featuring presentations, music, and literary readings on the theme "Fear and Loathing:  The Springboards of Modern Culture."  All events except the luncheon are free and open to the public and will be held in the Visual Arts and Technology Center, Room 120, unless otherwise noted. Tuesday, April 24:
6-6:45 p.m. Reception to honor Felipe de Ortega y Gasca (Loftin Student Center, Fiesta Room):  traditional conjunto music on Acordeón y Bajo Sexto with Juan and Armando Tejeda.

7-9 p.m.  Opening Ceremonies (Loftin Student Center): Introduction of topic and unveiling of journal "Voices," by Moumin Quazi.  A recognition of Felipe de Ortega y Gasca by Juan Rodriguez.  Presentation of Premio "Letras de Aztlán," by Roberto Calderon.  Honoring Felipe de Ortega y Gasca by Saul Sanchez and Juyan Bruce-Novoa.  A reading by Felipe de Ortega y Gasca, "Chicano Literature and Genesis of the term 'the Chicano Renaissance.'"

Wednesday, April 25:
9-9:50 a.m.  Stephen Badrich on "Fear and Loathing on the Internet;" Danika Brown & Deborah Cole on "The 'Real' Threat of Spanish Speakers."

10-10:50 a.m. Garry Partridge on "The De-Voicing of the Indigene in the American Edition of 'The Whale Rider;'"Michael Soto on "Mapping Fear."

11-11:50 a.m. Beatriz Rivera-Barnes on "Christoper Columbus" and Moumin Quazi on "The Terrifying, Renewed 'Sacred Mission of Civilization.'"

12-12:50 p.m. Arch Mayfield on "Cultural Sensitivity in Annie Proulx' 'Accordian Crimes'" and Rachel Jennings on "The Quiet War at the UT Press."

1-1:50 p.m. Film Viewing, Manuel Medrano on "Américo Paredes."

6:30-9 p.m.  An Evening of Literary Selections:  Beatriz Rivera-Barnes, Michelle Paulsen ("Polygamy in America?"), Chuck Taylor, Moumin Quazi, Daniel San Miguel, Jr., Nephtali De Leon, Carol Reposa, and Claudio San Miguel.

Thursday, April 26:
8-9:15 a.m.  Grace Keyes, "Shunned and Ridiculed," Gilbert Polanco on "What Wall?" and Jim West on "Demons, Ice Baths and Exclusion."

9:25-10:40 a.m.  Veronica Baker on "The Devil Within," Mark Noe on "The Rhetoric of Fear Meets Frankenstein's Monster," and Roberto Calderón on "The 21st Century Chicano/Latino Civil Rights Movement in Poetry and Images."
