ASL/Interpreter Training & Sorenson Partner With Mentorship Program |
The San Antonio College American Sign Language (ASL)/Interpreter Training program has completed its first year of a partnership with Sorenson Communications, provider of Video Relay Services (VRS). "This partnership provides students with accelerated training and focused experience that will prepare them to move more quickly into highly-skilled, high-value professional positions," said Lauri Metcalf, department chairperson. A Video Interpreter-Provisional Mentorship Program makes it possible for promising students to receive 60-80 hours of intensive training and mentoring in video relay interpreting under the guidance of seasoned Sorenson VRS professionals. In addition, Sorenson Communications advises the department on curriculum and practical experiences for students to prepare them for ASL interpreting careers. "San Antonio College is on the forefront in training quality VRS trilingual interpreters," said Pat Nola, president and CEO of Sorenson Communications. He added, "The quality of SAC graduates is exceptional. We are fortunate to participate with SAC in developing programs that will ensure future quality interpreting services for a growing number of VRS users." Metcalf added that the Enhanced and Trilingual Interpreting Certificates will help prepare students to work as a Video Relay Interpreter.
