SAC Announces Free Music Theory Classes for H. S. Grads:
|
As part of its commitment to community service and music education, the San Antonio College Music & Humanities Department is offering a free, month-long Music Theory College Preparatory Head Start Program from June 16 to July 3, Monday-Friday, 9:30-11 a.m. The program is primarily for recent high school graduates who attended public high schools that did not offer an Advanced Placement (AP) Music Theory course. The program is offered free of charge, without benefit of outside funding, and includes all materials. “Participants are recommended by their high school band and choral directors or private teachers for the opportunity,” said Dr. Jessica Howard, Chairperson of the Music & Humanities Department. She added, “They must have plans to attend a four-year institution in the fall of 2008 as music majors.” Howard said her department is offering this program because students who are strong in music performance and are accepted into four-year colleges are often weak in music theory, and a lack of preparation in music theory can stand in the way of their completing a degree in music. During the last two years, high school graduates from Brackenridge, Holmes, Incarnate Word, Jefferson, John Jay, Kennedy, O’Connor, Reagan, Roosevelt, South San and Taft high schools were chosen for the program. These students attended Baylor, Texas Tech, UTSA, UT Austin, UNT, University of Houston, Texas A&M Kingsville, St. Mary’s and Texas State University the following fall. Applications are currently being considered in the Department of Music and Humanities at San Antonio College for the summer 2008 program. The deadline for submissions is June 1. For more information regarding the program or nominations, contact Dr. Jessica Howard at 733-2730 or jhoward1@mail.accd.edu. |
